Original WWII German ‘Deutsche Zeitung in den Niederlanden’, published in Amsterdam on April 18, 1945.
This is issue number 273 of the fifth volume, published during the final weeks of the German occupation of the Netherlands.
The ‘Deutsche Zeitung in den Niederlanden’ was a German-language daily newspaper published in the occupied Netherlands with strongly National Socialist content.
The front page opens with ‘Abwehrschlacht an der Oder dauert an’ and contains the official German OKW report concerning the advancing Allied and Soviet armies.
Extensive reports cover the heavy fighting on the Eastern Front, including the battles along the Oder and around Breslau, Cottbus, Leipzig and towards Berlin.
The article ‘Die grosse Schlacht im Osten’ describes the massive Soviet offensive that would ultimately lead to the Battle of Berlin.
Significantly, this newspaper was published on April 18, 1945, only two days after the Red Army began its major offensive towards Berlin and while the Third Reich was rapidly approaching military collapse.
The Western Front is also covered, including reports concerning American forces near Magdeburg and Allied operations inside Germany.
The reverse contains the extensive article ‘Okinawa’, concerning the fierce fighting between American and Japanese forces in the Pacific.
Further reports concern the Soviet Union, Poland, Italy, Finland, Turkey, Great Britain, Palestine, San Francisco and international political developments.
The reporting provides an interesting example of German wartime propaganda during the final weeks of World War II, presenting the increasingly desperate military situation from the German perspective.
The newspaper was published in Amsterdam during almost the entire German occupation and was aimed particularly at Germans living in the Netherlands and members of the occupying forces.
The newspaper is in used condition with horizontal and vertical folds and normal traces of use, as visible in the photos.
An interesting piece of original wartime documentation published during the final phase of the war in Europe.

Het betreft nummer 273 uit de vijfde jaargang, verschenen tijdens de allerlaatste weken van de Duitse bezetting van Nederland.
De ‘Deutsche Zeitung in den Niederlanden’ was een Duitstalig dagblad dat tijdens de bezetting in Nederland verscheen en sterk nationaalsocialistisch van inhoud was.
De voorpagina opent met ‘Abwehrschlacht an der Oder dauert an’ en bevat het officiële Duitse OKW-bericht over de steeds verder oprukkende geallieerde en Sovjetlegers.
Uitgebreid wordt bericht over de zware gevechten aan het Oostfront, waaronder de strijd aan de Oder, rond Breslau, Cottbus, Leipzig en richting Berlijn.
In het artikel ‘Die grosse Schlacht im Osten’ wordt de enorme Sovjetaanval beschreven die uiteindelijk zou leiden tot de Slag om Berlijn.
Opvallend is dat deze krant verscheen op 18 april 1945, slechts twee dagen nadat het Rode Leger het grote offensief richting Berlijn was begonnen en terwijl het Derde Rijk militair op instorten stond.
Ook de strijd aan het Westfront komt aan bod, met berichten over Amerikaanse troepen bij Maagdenburg en geallieerde operaties in Duitsland.
De achterzijde bevat onder andere het uitgebreide artikel ‘Okinawa’ over de zware strijd tussen Amerikaanse en Japanse strijdkrachten in de Stille Oceaan.
Daarnaast staan er berichten in over de Sovjet-Unie, Polen, Italië, Finland, Turkije, Groot-Brittannië, Palestina, San Francisco en internationale politieke ontwikkelingen.
De berichtgeving vormt een interessant voorbeeld van de Duitse oorlogspropaganda tijdens de laatste weken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waarbij de uitzichtloze militaire situatie vanuit Duits perspectief werd gepresenteerd.
Het dagblad werd tijdens vrijwel de gehele Duitse bezetting vanuit Amsterdam uitgegeven en was bedoeld voor Duitsers in Nederland en de bezettingsmacht.
Het exemplaar verkeert in gebruikte staat met een horizontale en verticale vouw en normale gebruikssporen, zoals zichtbaar op de foto’s.
Een interessant origineel tijdsdocument uit april 1945, gepubliceerd tijdens de laatste fase van de oorlog in Europa.
