Original WW1 Imperial German Navy Zeppelin L 13 (LZ 45) Navigation Instrument by Askania Werke Berlin – Marineluftschiff L 13

Original WWI precision navigation and angle-measuring instrument of the Imperial German Navy, manufactured by Askania Werke in Berlin and preserved in its original wooden transport case.
The instrument is constructed primarily from brass and features a large circular graduated scale, two telescopic sights, multiple optical sights and fine adjustment mechanisms for precise angular measurements.
The instrument is clearly maker marked ‘ASKANIA WERKE BERLIN’.
Both the instrument and the brass inventory plate on the wooden case bear the Imperial German Navy property marking consisting of a crown above the letter ‘M’.
Of particular importance is the additional marking ‘L13 No 1’ on the brass plate of the case.
The designation ‘L13’ corresponds with the German naval airship L 13, works number LZ 45, which served with the Imperial German Navy during the First World War.
LZ 45 made its first flight on 23 July 1915 and entered Imperial German Navy service under the military designation L 13.
The airship belonged to the P-class and was employed for long-range reconnaissance over the North Sea, support of German naval operations and bombing missions against England.
L 13 became particularly notable for the raid during the night of 8–9 September 1915, when, under the command of Heinrich Mathy, it reached central London and carried out one of the important early Zeppelin attacks on the city.
During its operational career, L 13 completed a total of 45 reconnaissance missions and 15 attacks on England, dropping 20,667 kilograms of bombs.
On 18 August 1916, during an operation by the German High Seas Fleet, L 13 located part of the British fleet and transmitted its position by radio to Admiral Reinhard Scheer, demonstrating the important maritime reconnaissance role performed by these naval airships.
After becoming militarily obsolete, LZ 45/L 13 was decommissioned on 25 April 1917 and subsequently dismantled.
The combination of the Imperial German Navy markings, the designation ‘L13 No 1’, the ‘Askania Werke Berlin’ maker marking and the original numbered wooden case makes this a remarkable technical object from the era of the German naval Zeppelins.
The instrument remains together with its associated wooden fittings in the original lockable wooden transport case.

Het instrument is uitgevoerd in messing en voorzien van een grote cirkelvormige gradenverdeling, twee telescopische kijkers, meerdere optische vizieren en fijninstellingen waarmee nauwkeurige hoekmetingen konden worden uitgevoerd.
Op het instrument staat duidelijk de fabrikantmarkering ‘ASKANIA WERKE BERLIN’.
Daarnaast is zowel het instrument als de messing inventarisplaat op de houten kist voorzien van de keizerlijke marine-eigendomsmarkering met kroon boven de letter ‘M’.
Bijzonder is de aanvullende markering ‘L13 No 1’ op de messing plaat van de kist.
De aanduiding ‘L13’ correspondeert met het Duitse Marineluftschiff L 13, fabrieksnummer LZ 45, dat tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog bij de Kaiserliche Marine in dienst was.
LZ 45 maakte zijn eerste vlucht op 23 juli 1915 en werd door de Kaiserliche Marine in dienst genomen onder de militaire aanduiding L 13.
Het luchtschip behoorde tot de P-klasse en werd ingezet voor langeafstandverkenningen boven de Noordzee, ondersteuning van Duitse marineoperaties en bombardementsvluchten boven Engeland.
L 13 werd vooral bekend door de aanval in de nacht van 8 op 9 september 1915, toen het onder bevel van Heinrich Mathy het centrum van Londen bereikte en daar een van de belangrijkste vroege Zeppelinbombardementen uitvoerde.
Tijdens zijn operationele loopbaan voerde L 13 in totaal 45 verkenningsvluchten en 15 aanvallen op Engeland uit, waarbij 20.667 kilogram aan bommen werd afgeworpen.
Op 18 augustus 1916 ontdekte L 13 tijdens een operatie van de Duitse Hochseeflotte een deel van de Britse vloot en gaf de positie per radio door aan admiraal Reinhard Scheer, waarmee het luchtschip ook zijn belangrijke rol als maritiem verkenningsplatform vervulde.
Nadat het type militair verouderd was geraakt, werd LZ 45/L 13 op 25 april 1917 buiten dienst gesteld en vervolgens ontmanteld.
De combinatie van de Kaiserliche Marine-markeringen, de aanduiding ‘L13 No 1’, de fabrikant ‘Askania Werke Berlin’ en de originele genummerde houten kist maakt dit een bijzonder technisch object uit de periode van de Duitse Marineluftschiffe.
Het instrument bevindt zich samen met de bijbehorende houten onderdelen in de originele afsluitbare houten transportkist.
