Original WWII German Propaganda Leaflet ‘The Po is Waiting for You’ – Heinz Fehling 1945

Original German propaganda leaflet from 1945 entitled ‘The Po is waiting for you’, produced during the final phase of the Second World War.
The leaflet was designed by German artist and illustrator Heinz Fehling and formed part of German psychological warfare directed against Allied troops during the Italian Campaign.
The colourful side presents an idealised depiction of northern Italy around the River Po, including Verona, Padua, Rovigo, Ferrara, Modena, Mantua and Cremona.
On the right is a young Italian woman holding a tray of grapes, accompanied by the English text ‘The Po is waiting for you’.
An Urdu inscription is also printed at the lower left, indicating that the leaflet was additionally aimed at soldiers from British India serving with the Allied forces in Italy.
The reverse provides a dramatic contrast, depicting Death carrying two military helmets while moving through a heavily shelled battlefield.
The combination of an inviting image of Italy and a threatening depiction of death and destruction was intended to psychologically influence Allied soldiers and discourage them from continuing their advance towards the Po.
The leaflet bears the printed code ‘1908-1-45’ and dates from 1945.
A particularly striking example of German frontline propaganda from the final months of the war in Italy.
The leaflet remains in used condition with fold lines and traces of use as clearly visible in the photos.

Origineel Duits propagandapamflet uit 1945, getiteld ‘The Po is waiting for you’, vervaardigd tijdens de laatste fase van de Tweede Wereldoorlog

Het pamflet werd ontworpen door de Duitse kunstenaar en illustrator Heinz Fehling en maakte deel uit van de Duitse psychologische oorlogsvoering tegen geallieerde troepen tijdens de Italiaanse campagne.
De kleurrijke zijde toont een geïdealiseerde voorstelling van Noord-Italië rond de rivier de Po, met onder andere Verona, Padova, Rovigo, Ferrara, Modena, Mantova en Cremona.
Rechts staat een jonge Italiaanse vrouw met een schaal druiven afgebeeld, gecombineerd met de Engelstalige tekst ‘The Po is waiting for you’.
Linksonder bevindt zich tevens een tekst in Urdu, waarmee het pamflet zich mede richtte op militairen uit Brits-Indië die binnen de geallieerde strijdkrachten in Italië dienden.
De andere zijde vormt een sterk contrast en toont een sinistere zwart-witte voorstelling van de Dood die met twee helmen door een zwaar beschoten slagveld trekt.
De combinatie van het aantrekkelijke Italiaanse landschap en de dreigende voorstelling van dood en vernietiging moest geallieerde militairen psychologisch beïnvloeden en ontmoedigen hun opmars richting de Po voort te zetten.
Het pamflet is voorzien van de drukcode ‘1908-1-45’ en dateert uit 1945.
Een bijzonder en grafisch sterk voorbeeld van Duitse frontpropaganda uit de laatste maanden van de oorlog in Italië.
Het pamflet verkeert in gebruikte conditie met vouwlijnen en gebruikssporen zoals zichtbaar op de foto’s.
