Original National Order of the Republic of Ivory Coast, established on 10 April 1961 as the country’s highest state decoration.
The order was instituted shortly after independence from France and was awarded for distinguished services to the Republic of Ivory Coast.
This example is a neck decoration featuring a large enamelled cross in red and white, surrounded by a green enamelled laurel wreath.
The central medallion on the obverse depicts an elephant, the national symbol of Ivory Coast, surrounded by the inscription ‘République de Côte d’Ivoire’.
The reverse features a gold-coloured central medallion bearing the inscription ‘Union Discipline Travail’, the national motto of Ivory Coast.
The decoration is accompanied by a broad red neck ribbon with suspension ties.
The National Order consists of several classes and could be awarded to both Ivorian and foreign recipients for important civil and military merit.
The combination of colourful enamel, the elephant and the national motto makes this decoration immediately recognisable as an important Ivorian state award.

Originele Nationale Orde van de Republiek Ivoorkust, ingesteld op 10 april 1961 als de hoogste staatsonderscheiding van het land

De orde werd kort na de onafhankelijkheid van Frankrijk ingesteld en werd verleend voor bijzondere verdiensten voor de Republiek Ivoorkust.
Dit exemplaar betreft een halsdecoratie met een groot geëmailleerd kruis, uitgevoerd in rood en wit en omgeven door een groen geëmailleerde lauwerkrans.
Het centrale medaillon toont aan de voorzijde een olifant, het nationale symbool van Ivoorkust, omgeven door het opschrift ‘République de Côte d’Ivoire’.
Op de keerzijde bevindt zich een goudkleurig centraal medaillon met het opschrift ‘Union Discipline Travail’, het nationale motto van Ivoorkust.
De onderscheiding is voorzien van een breed rood halslint met draagband.
De Nationale Orde kent verschillende graden en kon worden toegekend aan zowel Ivoriaanse als buitenlandse ontvangers voor belangrijke civiele en militaire verdiensten.
