Original WWII German prisoner-of-war identification tag Stalag X-B Sandbostel

This original metal prisoner-of-war identification tag from the Second World War originates from Stalag X-B, the large German POW camp near Sandbostel.

Over the course of the war, tens of thousands of prisoners of various nationalities were held there—including Poles, French, Belgians/Dutch, Yugoslavs, Italians (after 1943), and later large numbers of Soviet prisoners of war. Conditions deteriorated significantly from 1941 onward: overcrowding, food shortages, poor hygiene, and disease (including dysentery and typhus) resulted in many casualties. In the final months of the war, the situation became increasingly chaotic due to additional transports and evacuations, while camp facilities collapsed under the strain.

The tag is stamped with the designation “Stalag XB” and the registration number 19891, making it a personal identification item worn by a prisoner during his internment.

Dit originele metalen krijgsgevangenenplaatje uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog is afkomstig uit Stalag X-B, het grote Duitse krijgsgevangenenkamp nabij Sandbostel. In de loop van de oorlog zaten er tienduizenden krijgsgevangenen van uiteenlopende nationaliteiten vast—o.a. Polen, Fransen, Belgen/Nederlanders, Joegoslaven, Italianen (na 1943) en later in grote aantallen ook Sovjet-krijgsgevangenen. De omstandigheden verslechterden vooral vanaf 1941 sterk: overbevolking, voedseltekort, slechte hygiëne en ziekte (o.a. dysenterie en tyfus) zorgden voor veel slachtoffers. In de laatste oorlogsmaanden werd het extra chaotisch doordat er transporten en evacuaties bijkwamen en de voorzieningen instortten. Het plaatje is voorzien van de ingeslagen aanduiding “Stalag XB” met het registratienummer 19891, wat het een persoonlijk identificatiemiddel maakt dat werd gedragen door een krijgsgevangene tijdens zijn internering. Een interessant object uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, bijzonder interessant voor verzamelaars van krijgsgevangenenmemorabilia, kampgerelateerde objecten en persoonlijke identificatie-items uit de oorlogsjaren.
