Original WWII German photograph taken in Voorburg in the Netherlands during the German occupation in November 1941.
The photograph shows a large German military sign containing regulations concerning the independent arrangement of quarters for military personnel.
At the top appears the wording ‘Selbständiges Quartiermachen ohne Genehmigung der Wehrmachtkommandantur Den Haag ist verboten’.
This stated that arranging or occupying quarters independently without permission from the Wehrmachtkommandantur in The Hague was prohibited.
The left side of the sign states that the Wehrmachtkommandantur could be contacted by telephone through the mayor.
On the right appear the designations ‘Der Wehrmachtsbefehlshaber in den Niederlanden’ and ‘Der Oberquartiermeister’.
Below the main sign is a large German directional sign bearing the wording ‘Zum Bürgermeister’, pointing towards the mayor.
The combination of both signs illustrates how the German military authorities used the local Dutch municipal administration in connection with the billeting of military personnel.
The reverse is handwritten in pencil with ‘Voorburg’ and ‘Nov. 41’, attributing the photograph to Voorburg in November 1941.
The photograph provides an interesting view of visible German military regulations in public spaces during the occupation of the Netherlands.
The photograph measures approximately 6 x 6 cm.
The photograph remains in used condition with light discoloration and handling traces as visible in the photographs.

Originele WWII Duitse foto, genomen in Voorburg in Nederland tijdens de Duitse bezetting in november 1941
Op de foto staat een groot Duits militair bord met voorschriften betreffende het zelfstandig regelen van kwartieren voor militairen.
Bovenaan staat de tekst ‘Selbständiges Quartiermachen ohne Genehmigung der Wehrmachtkommandantur Den Haag ist verboten’.
Hiermee werd aangegeven dat het zonder toestemming van de Wehrmachtkommandantur Den Haag verboden was zelfstandig onderdak of kwartieren te regelen.
Links op het bord staat vermeld dat de Wehrmachtkommandantur telefonisch bereikbaar was via de burgemeester.
Aan de rechterzijde staan de aanduidingen ‘Der Wehrmachtsbefehlshaber in den Niederlanden’ en ‘Der Oberquartiermeister’.
Onder het hoofdbord bevindt zich een grote Duitse wegwijzer met de tekst ‘Zum Bürgermeister’, die de richting naar de burgemeester aangeeft.
De combinatie van beide borden toont hoe de Duitse militaire autoriteiten de lokale Nederlandse gemeentelijke organisatie gebruikten bij het regelen van de legering van militairen.
Op de achterzijde van de foto staat met potlood ‘Voorburg’ en ‘Nov. 41’ geschreven, waarmee de opname wordt toegeschreven aan Voorburg in november 1941.
De foto geeft een interessant beeld van de zichtbare Duitse militaire regelgeving in de openbare ruimte tijdens de bezetting van Nederland.
