Original WWII German Photo Dutch Resistance Wall Graffiti ‘W OZO’ The Hague 1941

Original German photograph from the Second World War showing Dutch resistance-related wall markings in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Painted in white on the brick wall are a crown, the letter ‘W’ and the letters ‘OZO’.
The crowned letter ‘W’ referred to Queen Wilhelmina and was used during the German occupation as an expression of loyalty to the Dutch royal family.
‘OZO’ stood for ‘Oranje Zal Overwinnen’, meaning ‘Orange Shall Overcome’, and was used during the occupation as a resistance-minded slogan and expression of support for the House of Orange.
The photograph therefore documents a striking example of anti-German and pro-Orange expressions in the wartime streets of The Hague.
The reverse is dated 31 August 1941, Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday, directly corresponding with the pro-Orange symbolism painted on the wall.
The reverse also bears the photographer’s stamp ‘Talens – Delft’.
The photograph measures approximately 6 x 6 cm.

Originele Duitse foto uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog van Nederlandse verzetsgezinde muurtekens in Den Haag

Op de bakstenen muur zijn met witte verf een kroon, de letter ‘W’ en de letters ‘OZO’ aangebracht.
De letter ‘W’ met kroon verwees naar koningin Wilhelmina en was tijdens de Duitse bezetting een uiting van trouw aan het Nederlandse koningshuis.
‘OZO’ stond voor ‘Oranje Zal Overwinnen’ en werd tijdens de bezetting gebruikt als verzetsgezinde leus en teken van steun aan het Huis van Oranje.
De opname documenteert daarmee een opvallend voorbeeld van anti-Duitse en Oranjegezinde uitingen in het straatbeeld van Den Haag.
Op de achterzijde staat de datum 31 augustus 1941, de verjaardag van koningin Wilhelmina, wat direct aansluit bij de Oranjegezinde symboliek op de muur.
Daarnaast is de achterzijde voorzien van het fotostempel ‘Talens – Delft’.
De foto heeft een formaat van circa 6 x 6 cm.
