Original WWII German Dutch Martial Law Decree Poster Seyss-Inquart May 1943

Original German-Dutch decree poster from the Second World War concerning the proclamation of police martial law throughout the occupied Netherlands.
The poster is printed bilingually with the German heading ‘Erlass’ on the left and the Dutch heading ‘Decreet’ on the right, with a German eagle and swastika above both texts.
The decree was issued by Reich Commissioner Arthur Seyss-Inquart and is dated The Hague, 1 May 1943.
It proclaims police martial law with immediate effect throughout the occupied Netherlands.
The population was ordered to refrain from actions that could disturb public order or security and to comply with measures introduced under the martial law regulations.
According to the decree, violations of these orders could be dealt with under summary martial law procedures.
Extensive powers were granted to the Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer for maintaining and restoring public order.
The document also names special representatives for various Dutch provinces, including Himmenrich for North Brabant, Brandes for Gelderland, Schwebel for South Holland, Dr. Schroeder for North Holland, Münzer for Zeeland, Müller-Reinert for Utrecht, Ross for Friesland, Weidlich for Overijssel, Dr. Conring for Groningen and Sellmer for Drenthe.
The lower section contains a ‘Bijzondere Beschikking’ listing offences including participation in public gatherings, refusal to work, unauthorized possession of weapons, producing or distributing pamphlets and resistance against public authority.
The text states that certain offences could be prosecuted under martial law and subjected to severe penalties, including the death penalty.
This poster is an imposing historical document relating directly to the repressive measures imposed by the German occupation authorities in the Netherlands during 1943.

Originele Duits-Nederlandse decreetposter uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog betreffende de afkondiging van het politiestandrecht in het bezette Nederlandse gebied

De poster is tweetalig uitgevoerd met links de Duitse titel ‘Erlass’ en rechts de Nederlandse titel ‘Decreet’, met boven beide teksten de Duitse adelaar met hakenkruis.
Het decreet werd uitgevaardigd door Rijkscommissaris Arthur Seyss-Inquart en is gedateerd ‘s-Gravenhage, 1 Mei 1943.
In het decreet wordt met onmiddellijke werking het politiestandrecht voor het gehele bezette Nederlandse gebied afgekondigd.
De bevolking wordt bevolen zich te onthouden van handelingen die de openbare orde en veiligheid konden verstoren en zich te onderwerpen aan maatregelen die in het kader van het politiestandrecht werden uitgevaardigd.
Overtredingen van deze bevelen konden volgens de bekendmaking standrechtelijk worden berecht.
Het decreet verleende de Höhere SS- und Polizeiführer vergaande bevoegdheden voor de handhaving en het herstel van de openbare orde.
Daarnaast worden bijzondere gemachtigden voor verschillende Nederlandse provincies genoemd, waaronder Himmenrich voor Noord-Brabant, Brandes voor Gelderland, Schwebel voor Zuid-Holland, Dr. Schroeder voor Noord-Holland, Münzer voor Zeeland, Müller-Reinert voor Utrecht, Ross voor Friesland, Weidlich voor Overijssel, Dr. Conring voor Groningen en Sellmer voor Drenthe.
In het onderste gedeelte staat een ‘Bijzondere Beschikking’ waarin onder andere deelname aan openbare samenscholingen, werkweigering, het onbevoegd dragen van wapens, het vervaardigen of verspreiden van pamfletten en verzet tegen het openbaar gezag worden genoemd.
Daarbij wordt vermeld dat bepaalde overtredingen standrechtelijk konden worden veroordeeld en met zware straffen, waaronder de doodstraf, konden worden bestraft.
De poster vormt een indringend historisch document van de repressieve maatregelen van het Duitse bezettingsbestuur in Nederland in 1943.
