The sleeve shield is in worn but good condition and it is a 1st type Waffen-SS Flemish volunteer legion shield.
The insignia features yellow stitched thread with a black Flemish lion.
The Flemish Legion was a military unit made up of Flemish volunteers who fought alongside the Germans against the Red Army of the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front during World War II.
On 7 July 1941, Staf De Clercq announced the establishment of a Flemish Legion and about 450 volunteers left Brussels on 6 August 1941 for the Dębica training camp in Poland.
On November 4, 1941, the German army command considered the training of the Flemish Legion to be completed and the unit was sent to the front.
About 1100 soldiers marched to the Leningrad Front in harsh weather conditions.
In the hard battle against the partisans, the first legionaries were killed.
This way of fighting gave the Flemish the necessary combat experience and after 6 weeks the legion was deployed as a frontline unit.

Origineel WWII Vlaams Waffen-SS 1ste type vrijwilligers legioen mouwschild
Het mouwschild is in gedragen maar goede conditie en het betreft een 1ste type Waffen-SS Vlaams vrijwilligers legioen schild.
Het embleem is voorzien van geel gestikt draad met een zwarte Vlaamse leeuw.
Het Vlaams Legioen was een militaire eenheid bestaande uit Vlaamse vrijwilligers die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog aan de zijde van de Duitsers tegen het Rode Leger van de Sovjet-Unie vochten op het Oostfront.
Op 7 juli 1941 kondigde Staf De Clercq de oprichting van een Vlaams Legioen aan.
Ongeveer 450 vrijwilligers vertrokken op 6 augustus 1941 vanuit Brussel naar het opleidingskamp Dębica in Polen.
Op 4 november 1941 beschouwde de Duitse legerleiding de opleiding van het Vlaams Legioen als voltooid en werd de eenheid naar het front gestuurd.
Ongeveer 1100 soldaten trokken in barre weersomstandigheden naar het Leningradfront.
In de harde strijd tegen de partizanen sneuvelden de eerste legionairs.
Deze manier van vechten gaf de Vlamingen de nodige gevechtservaring en na 6 weken werd het legioen als frontlijneenheid ingezet.
