Original WWII British Mk VII Cockleshell Canoe – Extremely Rare Special Forces Museum Piece

Original WWII British Mk VII Cockleshell Canoe from the Second World War.
This extremely rare military canoe was developed for British special operations in the Far East.
The Mk VII was designed and manufactured by Warwick Aviation Co. Ltd. and was the first Cockleshell Canoe constructed from aluminium alloy.
Its construction consists of three separate hull sections that could be dismantled for transportation and assembled again in the field.
The riveted aluminium construction clearly demonstrates the influence of the aircraft manufacturing techniques in which Warwick Aviation specialised.
The Mk VII was developed in cooperation with the Combined Operations Pilotage Parties and was trialled by servicemen associated with the Royal Marines, COPP and the Special Boat Section.
The canoe underwent operational trials in Ceylon, present-day Sri Lanka, in preparation for special operations in South-East Asia.
In 1945, the type was deployed in the Far East against Japanese forces, particularly within the Burma theatre, for clandestine reconnaissance, infiltration and commando operations.
The Mk VII is associated with the Combined Operations Pilotage Parties, Royal Marines Detachment 385 and the Special Boat Section within British special operations in this region.
Its low profile and ability to move almost silently across the water allowed small teams to approach enemy-held territory by sea, rivers and coastal areas.
The two-man canoe features the original metal outriggers which provided additional stability on the water.
This example is accompanied by three wooden paddles, the rudder system with ropes, an additional rudder, a pump, an additional pump and various associated fittings and construction components.
The large watertight compartments with their metal hatches are also still present.
The rubber sealing edges underneath the lids of these compartments have been replaced.
Original factory and inspection markings are stamped in various locations, including the visible A5014/1, A5014/2 and A5014/4 markings together with circular inspection stamps.
These markings form an important detail of the craft’s original military manufacture.
Only 200 Mk VII Cockleshell Canoes were produced during the Second World War for British special operations.
Of this limited production, only seven examples are currently known to survive worldwide.
With only seven known surviving examples, the Mk VII ranks among the extremely rare surviving British Special Forces craft of the Second World War.
The combination of this exceptional rarity, original construction, surviving stamped markings and numerous accompanying components makes this an important museum-quality historical object.

Originele WWII Britse Mk VII Cockleshell Canoe uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog

Deze extreem zeldzame militaire kano werd ontwikkeld voor Britse speciale operaties in het Verre Oosten.
De Mk VII werd ontworpen en vervaardigd door Warwick Aviation Co. Ltd. en was de eerste Cockleshell Canoe die uit aluminiumlegering werd opgebouwd.
De constructie bestaat uit drie afzonderlijke rompdelen die voor transport konden worden gedemonteerd en ter plaatse weer aan elkaar konden worden gekoppeld.
Het geklonken aluminium ontwerp toont duidelijk de invloed van de vliegtuigbouw waarin Warwick Aviation gespecialiseerd was.
De Mk VII werd ontwikkeld in samenwerking met de Combined Operations Pilotage Parties en werd beproefd door militairen verbonden aan onder andere de Royal Marines, COPP en de Special Boat Section.
De kano werd onder operationele omstandigheden beproefd op Ceylon, het huidige Sri Lanka, als voorbereiding op speciale operaties in Zuidoost-Azië.
In 1945 werd het type in het Verre Oosten ingezet tegen de Japanse strijdkrachten, met name binnen het strijdtoneel van Birma, voor clandestiene verkennings-, infiltratie- en commando-operaties.
De Mk VII is onder andere verbonden met de Combined Operations Pilotage Parties, Royal Marines Detachment 385 en de Special Boat Section binnen de Britse speciale operaties in deze regio.
Door het lage profiel en de mogelijkheid zich vrijwel geruisloos over het water te verplaatsen konden kleine teams via zee, rivieren en kustgebieden vijandelijk gebied benaderen.
De tweepersoons kano is voorzien van de originele metalen outriggers die voor extra stabiliteit op het water zorgden.
Bij dit exemplaar bevinden zich drie houten peddels, het roersysteem met touwen, een extra roer, een pomp, een extra pomp en diverse bijbehorende bevestigings- en constructiedelen.
Ook de grote waterdichte compartimenten met metalen luiken zijn nog aanwezig.
De rubberen afdichtingsranden onder de deksels van deze compartimenten zijn vervangen.
Op verschillende plaatsen zijn originele fabrieks- en inspectiemarkeringen ingeslagen, waaronder de zichtbare A5014/1, A5014/2 en A5014/4 markeringen en ronde inspectiestempels.
Deze markeringen vormen een belangrijk detail van de oorspronkelijke militaire vervaardiging van het vaartuig.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden slechts 200 Mk VII Cockleshell Canoes geproduceerd voor Britse speciale operaties.
Van deze beperkte productie zijn tegenwoordig wereldwijd slechts zeven exemplaren bekend die nog bestaan.
Met slechts zeven bekende overgebleven exemplaren behoort de Mk VII tot de extreem zeldzame Britse Special Forces-vaartuigen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
De combinatie van deze uitzonderlijke zeldzaamheid, oorspronkelijke constructie, aanwezige stempels en de vele bijbehorende onderdelen maakt dit een belangrijk object van museale kwaliteit.
