De militairen dragen Stahlhelmen en hebben zich rond de mitrailleur opgesteld, terwijl één van hen met een verrekijker het terrein observeert.
De mitrailleur wordt gevoed met een munitieband en diende volgens het originele bijschrift als flankbeveiliging voor een Duitse stoottroep.
Op de achterzijde staat het originele Duitse bijschrift ‘Von der französischen Kampffront’ met daaronder ‘Maschinengewehr als Flankenschutz eines Stosstrupps’.
Hiermee wordt de opname omschreven als een mitrailleur die werd ingezet ter bescherming van de flank van een aanvallende stoottroep.
