Original Dutch Miniature Knight’s Cross Order of the Netherlands Lion – Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw

Original Dutch miniature version of the Knight’s Cross belonging to the Order of the Netherlands Lion, known in Dutch as the ‘Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw’.
The Order of the Netherlands Lion was instituted on 29 September 1815 by King William I and is one of the oldest and most important Dutch orders of chivalry.
The miniature is executed as a white enamelled Maltese cross with gilt-coloured borders and decorative ornaments between the arms of the cross.
Above the cross is the Dutch royal crown from which the decoration is suspended.
The blue central medallion on the obverse depicts the Dutch lion holding a sword and bundle of arrows.
The reverse features a blue medallion bearing the motto ‘Virtus Nobilitat’, which translates as ‘Virtue Ennobles’.
The decoration is suspended from its blue ribbon with orange-yellow stripes along both sides.
Miniature decorations of this type were worn by recipients on occasions when wearing the full-size insignia was not customary.

Originele Nederlandse miniatuurversie van het Ridderkruis behorend bij de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw

De Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw werd op 29 september 1815 ingesteld door koning Willem I en behoort tot de oudste en belangrijkste Nederlandse ridderorden.
Het miniatuur is uitgevoerd als een wit geëmailleerd Maltezer kruis met goudkleurige omlijsting en sierlijke ornamenten tussen de armen van het kruis.
Boven het kruis bevindt zich de Nederlandse koningskroon waarmee het kleinood aan het lint is bevestigd.
Het blauwe medaillon op de voorzijde toont de Nederlandse leeuw met zwaard en pijlenbundel.
Op de keerzijde bevindt zich een blauw medaillon met het devies ‘Virtus Nobilitat’, wat vertaald kan worden als ‘Deugd adelt’.
Het kleinood hangt aan het bijbehorende blauwe lint met oranjegele banen langs beide zijden.
Dergelijke miniatuuronderscheidingen werden door gedecoreerden gedragen bij gelegenheden waarbij het dragen van de volledige onderscheiding niet gebruikelijk was.
