Original 1856 Dutch King Willem III Monument Commemorative Medal

Original Dutch bronze commemorative medal from 1856, produced to commemorate the unveiling of the Monument to the National Spirit of 1830 and 1831 on Dam Square in Amsterdam.
The monument was unveiled on 27 August 1856 in the presence of King Willem III and was officially known as ‘De Eendracht’, although it became popularly known as ‘Naatje op de Dam’.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of King Willem III surrounded by the inscription ‘WILLEM III KONING DER NED. G.H.V.L.’.
Below the portrait is the signature ‘S.C. ELION F.’, referring to Dutch medallist Samuel Cohen Elion.
The reverse depicts the monument in detail and bears the surrounding inscription ‘IN TEGENWOORDIGHEID DES KONINGS ONTHULD DEN 27 AUGUSTUS 1856’.
The monument commemorated the Dutch national spirit and the events of 1830 and 1831 connected with the Belgian Revolution and the Ten Days’ Campaign.

Originele Nederlandse bronzen herdenkingspenning uit 1856, vervaardigd ter gelegenheid van de onthulling van het Monument ter Herinnering aan den Volksgeest van 1830 en 1831 op de Dam in Amsterdam
Het monument werd op 27 augustus 1856 in aanwezigheid van koning Willem III onthuld en stond officieel bekend als ‘De Eendracht’, maar kreeg in de volksmond de bekende bijnaam ‘Naatje op de Dam’.
De voorzijde van de penning toont het naar rechts gerichte portret van koning Willem III met het omschrift ‘WILLEM III KONING DER NED. G.H.V.L.’.
Onder het portret bevindt zich de signatuur ‘S.C. ELION F.’, verwijzend naar de Nederlandse medailleur Samuel Cohen Elion.
De keerzijde toont een gedetailleerde afbeelding van het monument met rondom het opschrift ‘IN TEGENWOORDIGHEID DES KONINGS ONTHULD DEN 27 AUGUSTUS 1856’.
Het monument werd opgericht ter herinnering aan de Nederlandse volksgeest en de gebeurtenissen van 1830 en 1831 rond de Belgische Opstand en de Tiendaagse Veldtocht.
