Original 1700-1750 Dutch flintlock cavalry pistol from Maastricht

This finely crafted Dutch flintlock cavalry pistol from the first half of the 18th century (circa 1700–1750) is a highly representative example of the high-quality firearm production in the Southern Netherlands.
The pistol features a long, octagonal brass barrel profile and richly engraved brass mounts that harmonize beautifully with the warm-toned, finely carved zebrano wood stock.
The elegant Baroque scroll and leaf motifs in both the wood and the metal give the weapon a distinctly luxurious appearance.
The lock is marked Mastrickt, directly referring to the important arms-making city of Maastricht.
Notably, this piece shows strong stylistic similarities to pistols produced in the workshop of Oger Leblan, a prominent Maastricht gunmaker active in the 18th century and renowned for his elegantly shaped flintlocks, richly decorated brass furniture, and refined wood carvings.
The shape of the hammer, the style of the side plate, and the characteristic ornamentation of the mounts correspond closely to his production.
With its substantial dimensions, heavy brass barrel, and extensively applied decorative elements, this cavalry pistol served not only as a reliable weapon but also as a status symbol for officers and affluent civilians.

Origineel 1700-1750 Nederlands vuursteen ruiterpistool uit Maastricht 

Dit fraai afgewerkte Nederlandse vuursteen ruiterpistool uit de eerste helft van de 18e eeuw (circa 1700–1750) vormt een bijzonder representatief voorbeeld van de hoogwaardige vuurwapenproductie in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Het pistool is uitgerust met een lang, achthoekig messing loopprofiel en rijk gegraveerde messing beslagdelen die prachtig harmoniëren met het warm getinte, fijn gesneden houten kolfwerk. De sierlijke barokke krul- en bladmotieven in zowel het zebranohout als het metaal geven het wapen een uitgesproken luxueuze uitstraling. Het slotwerk is gemerkt met Mastrickt, wat direct verwijst naar de belangrijke wapenmakersstad Maastricht. Opvallend is dat dit stuk sterke stilistische overeenkomsten vertoont met de pistolen uit de werkplaats van Oger Leblan, een vooraanstaand Maastrichtse wapenmaker die actief was in de 18e eeuw en bekend stond om zijn elegant geprofileerde vuursteensloten, rijk gedecoreerde messing monturen en verfijnde houtgravures. De vorm van de haan, de stijl van de zijplaat en de karakteristieke ornamentiek van het beslag sluiten nauw aan bij zijn productie. Met zijn forse afmetingen, zware messing loop en uitgebreid aangebrachte decoraties was dit ruiterpistool niet enkel een betrouwbaar cavaleriewapen, maar ook een statussymbool voor officieren en welgestelde burgers.
