Original WWII German Eastern Front Trench Art Wooden Plaques – Leningrad 1941 & Woronta River 1942
150 €
Original set of two WWII German handmade wooden commemorative plaques dating from the period of the fighting on the Eastern Front.
Both plaques are made from cross-sections of a tree with the original bark retained around the edges and measure approximately 31 cm in diameter.
The first example bears the inscription ‘Zur Erinnerung an die Winterstellung um Leningrad 1941’, translating as ‘In remembrance of the winter position around Leningrad 1941’.
Below the inscription is a hand-decorated depiction of a military winter position or bunker.
This example provides a direct reference to the German presence around Leningrad in 1941 during the opening phase of the siege of the city.
The second plaque bears the inscription ‘Auf Wacht am Worontafluss 42’, meaning approximately ‘On guard at the Woronta River 1942’.
Below the inscription is a handmade depiction of an Eastern Front landscape featuring trees, a military shelter and field positions.
The inscriptions and decorations have been applied directly to the wood in several colours and feature a decorative German lettering style.
Metal hanging brackets remain attached to the reverse, allowing the plaques to originally be displayed on a wall.
Several later handwritten annotations are also present on the reverse.
Personal commemorative pieces of this type were made or obtained by servicemen as souvenirs of their time and experiences at the front and are today commonly collected as trench art or front art.
The combination of two associated examples with explicit references to Leningrad in 1941 and the Eastern Front in 1942 makes this a particularly tangible historical ensemble.
The plaques remain in used condition with visible traces of use and surface wear.
Interesting original WWII German Eastern Front trench art for collectors of Wehrmacht, Leningrad and Eastern Front related historical objects.
