Original British Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899–1902 Miniature with Five Clasps – Second Boer War

Original British miniature Queen’s South Africa Medal dating from the period of the Second Boer War of 1899-1902.
This reduced-size version of the campaign medal features the portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse surrounded by the inscription ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX’.
The reverse depicts Britannia holding a flag and laurel wreath with the inscription ‘SOUTH AFRICA’ above.
The medal retains the distinctive red, yellow and blue ribbon associated with the Queen’s South Africa Medal.
Five metal clasps are mounted on the ribbon and are inscribed ‘CAPE COLONY’, ‘ORANGE FREE STATE’, ‘TRANSVAAL’, ‘SOUTH AFRICA 1901’ and ‘S. AFRICA 1899-1902’.
The Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps refer to different areas of military operations during the Second Boer War.
The ‘SOUTH AFRICA 1901’ clasp relates to service in South Africa during 1901.
The upper ‘S. AFRICA 1899-1902′ clasp is an unusual miniature clasp and is not among the standard officially issued clasps for the full-size Queen’s South Africa Medal.
Miniature medals were worn by servicemen on formal occasions when full-size decorations were not worn.
An interesting original Boer War collector’s item with an unusual combination of five clasps.

Originele Britse miniatuur Queen’s South Africa Medal uit de periode van de Tweede Boerenoorlog van 1899 tot 1902

Deze verkleinde uitvoering van de campagnemedaille toont op de voorzijde het portret van koningin Victoria met het opschrift ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX’.
De keerzijde toont Britannia met een vlag en lauwerkrans, met daarboven het opschrift ‘SOUTH AFRICA’.
De medaille is voorzien van het rood-geel-blauwe lint behorende bij de Queen’s South Africa Medal.
Op het lint zijn vijf metalen gespen aangebracht met de opschriften ‘CAPE COLONY’, ‘ORANGE FREE STATE’, ‘TRANSVAAL’, ‘SOUTH AFRICA 1901’ en ‘S. AFRICA 1899-1902’.
De gespen Cape Colony, Orange Free State en Transvaal verwijzen naar de verschillende gebieden waarin tijdens de Tweede Boerenoorlog militaire operaties plaatsvonden.
De gesp ‘SOUTH AFRICA 1901’ verwijst naar dienst in Zuid-Afrika gedurende het jaar 1901.
De bovenste gesp ‘S. AFRICA 1899-1902′ is een afwijkende miniatuurgesp en behoort niet tot de standaard officieel uitgegeven gespen voor de volledige Queen’s South Africa Medal.
Miniatuurmedailles werden door militairen gedragen bij formele gelegenheden waarbij de volledige onderscheidingen niet werden gedragen.
Een interessant origineel verzamelobject uit de periode van de Tweede Boerenoorlog met een opvallende combinatie van vijf gespen.
