Original WWII US Navy Bureau of Ordnance Mark 1 Anti-Aircraft Range Indicator from the Second World War.
This portable instrument was used to estimate the range of enemy aircraft for anti-aircraft purposes.
According to the instruction ‘TO BE HELD 24 INCHES FROM EYE’, the operator held the instrument 24 inches from the eye and compared the visible wingspan of an aircraft with the corresponding scales.
The front features several scales for known aircraft types and their wingspans, including the Junkers 86, Heinkel 111-115, Dornier 17, Junkers 88, Messerschmitt 110, Roc, Skua, Shark, Henley, Swordfish and Junkers 87.
The scales indicate ranges in yards and correspond with different aircraft wingspans including 45, 60, 75 and 90 feet.
Thin wires positioned across the central opening served as references for estimating the range.
The rotating metal pointer is marked ‘YARDS’ on both sides.
The reverse is manufacturer marked ‘FIDELITY ENGINEERING Co. LTD’ together with ‘PATT. No 10422’.
The instrument is an interesting example of a simple optical device used during the Second World War for aircraft identification and anti-aircraft range estimation.
The original markings, scales, rotating pointer and construction remain present.

Dit draagbare hulpmiddel werd gebruikt voor het inschatten van de afstand tot vijandelijke vliegtuigen ten behoeve van luchtafweergeschut.
De gebruiker hield het instrument volgens de instructie ‘TO BE HELD 24 INCHES FROM EYE’ op 24 inch van het oog en vergeleek de zichtbare spanwijdte van een vliegtuig met de aangebrachte schaalverdelingen.
Op de voorzijde bevinden zich verschillende schalen voor bekende vliegtuigtypen en hun spanwijdtes, waaronder Junkers 86, Heinkel 111-115, Dornier 17, Junkers 88, Messerschmitt 110, Roc, Skua, Shark, Henley, Swordfish en Junkers 87.
De schalen geven afstanden in yards weer en zijn gekoppeld aan verschillende spanwijdtes van onder andere 45, 60, 75 en 90 feet.
In het centrale gedeelte bevinden zich dunne draden die als referentie voor de afstandsbepaling werden gebruikt.
De draaibare metalen aanwijzer is aan beide zijden gemarkeerd met ‘YARDS’.
Op de achterzijde staat de fabrikant ‘FIDELITY ENGINEERING Co. LTD’ met ‘PATT. No 10422’.
Het instrument is een interessant voorbeeld van een eenvoudig optisch hulpmiddel dat tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd ingezet voor vliegtuigidentificatie en afstandsschatting bij luchtafweer.
De originele opschriften, schaalverdelingen, draaibare aanwijzer en constructie zijn nog aanwezig.
