Original WWII German Dutch Propaganda Poster Arctic Convoy PQ 17 1942

Original German Dutch-language propaganda poster from the Second World War titled ‘De catastrophe van het konvooi in de IJszee’.
The poster was issued in 1942 in response to the Allied Arctic convoy PQ 17, which sailed from Great Britain towards Archangel in the Soviet Union during June and July 1942.
At the centre is an illustrated map of Northern Europe showing the route of the Anglo-American convoy via Iceland to Archangel and attacks by German submarines and Luftwaffe aircraft.
The map is surrounded by colourful illustrations depicting German aircraft, ships, U-boats, rescue aircraft, burning merchant vessels and shipwrecked sailors in the Arctic Ocean.
The accompanying propaganda text presents the severe losses suffered by PQ 17 as a major German victory and claims that 38 merchant vessels carrying tanks, aircraft, ammunition and other supplies had been completely destroyed.
At the bottom, the poster directly targets Winston Churchill by asking when he would tell his people and the world the truth about this ‘catastrophic defeat’.
The poster is a notable example of German wartime propaganda in which a genuine Allied setback was exploited to exaggerate German military success and undermine confidence in the Allied leadership.
The lower right corner is marked ‘Mpl. IV-NL Nr. 109 – VIII/1942’, identifying this Dutch-language edition and dating it to August 1942.
The poster measures approximately 59.5 x 42 cm and shows original fold lines and traces of use as visible in the photographs.

Originele Duitse Nederlandstalige propagandaposter uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog met als titel ‘De catastrophe van het konvooi in de IJszee’

De poster werd in 1942 uitgegeven naar aanleiding van het geallieerde konvooi PQ 17, dat in juni en juli 1942 vanuit Groot-Brittannië richting Archangel in de Sovjet-Unie voer.
Centraal staat een geïllustreerde kaart van Noord-Europa waarop de route van het Engels-Amerikaanse konvooi via IJsland naar Archangel en de aanvallen door Duitse onderzeeboten en luchtstrijdkrachten worden weergegeven.
Rondom de kaart staan verschillende kleurrijke illustraties van Duitse vliegtuigen, schepen, onderzeeboten, reddingsvliegtuigen, brandende vrachtschepen en schipbreukelingen in de Noordelijke IJszee.
De begeleidende propagandatekst presenteert de zware verliezen van PQ 17 als een grote Duitse overwinning en stelt dat 38 vrachtschepen met onder meer tanks, vliegtuigen en munitie volledig zouden zijn vernietigd.
Onderaan richt de poster zich rechtstreeks tegen Winston Churchill met de vraag wanneer hij tegenover zijn volk en de wereld met de waarheid over deze ‘catastrophale nederlaag’ voor de dag zou komen.
De voorstelling is een duidelijk voorbeeld van Duitse oorlogspropaganda waarin een werkelijke geallieerde nederlaag werd gebruikt om de militaire prestaties van Duitsland uit te vergroten en het vertrouwen in de geallieerde oorlogsleiding te ondermijnen.
Rechtsonder is de aanduiding ‘Mpl. IV-NL Nr. 109 – VIII/1942’ aangebracht, waarmee deze Nederlandstalige uitgave in augustus 1942 wordt gedateerd.
