Original German Army photograph from the First World War showing German soldiers with a large quantity of heavy artillery shells and unexploded ordnance at Kosowo.
The photograph shows several German soldiers among large shells and other ammunition remains, with some of the men excavating and examining the ammunition.
Particularly striking are the different sizes of heavy projectiles in the foreground, including several very large artillery shells.
The original German caption on the reverse states ‘Blindgänger aus einem durch deutsche Artillerie in die Luft geflogenen Munitionslager in Kosowo’.
This translates approximately as ‘Unexploded shells from an ammunition depot in Kosowo blown up by German artillery’.
The caption therefore identifies the scene as the remains of an ammunition depot struck by German artillery during the fighting.
The combination of German soldiers and the large quantity of heavy ammunition makes this a particularly detailed photograph of the material effects of artillery fire during the First World War.
The reverse also bears the original W. Meissner, Berlin SW.68, Zimmerstrasse 72/74 stamp.

Originele Duitse legerfoto uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog met Duitse militairen bij een grote hoeveelheid zware artilleriegranaten en blindgangers in Kosowo

Op de foto staan meerdere Duitse militairen tussen verschillende grote granaten en andere munitieresten, waarbij enkele soldaten bezig zijn met het vrijgraven en onderzoeken van de munitie.
Opvallend zijn de verschillende formaten zware projectielen op de voorgrond, waaronder enkele zeer grote artilleriegranaten.
Het originele Duitse bijschrift op de achterzijde vermeldt ‘Blindgänger aus einem durch deutsche Artillerie in die Luft geflogenen Munitionslager in Kosowo’.
Vrij vertaald betekent dit ‘Blindgangers uit een door Duitse artillerie opgeblazen munitiedepot in Kosowo’.
Hierdoor is duidelijk dat de opname de overblijfselen toont van een munitieopslagplaats die tijdens de gevechten door Duitse artillerie werd getroffen.
De combinatie van de Duitse militairen en de grote hoeveelheid zware munitie maakt dit een bijzonder gedetailleerde opname van de materiële gevolgen van artilleriebeschietingen tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
Op de achterzijde bevindt zich tevens de originele stempel van W. Meissner, Berlin SW.68, Zimmerstrasse 72/74.
