Original German Army photograph from the First World War showing German artillerymen with a heavy 21 cm Mörser in the combat area near Arras.
The photograph shows several German soldiers working together to handle a heavy artillery shell while loading the gun.
The original caption on the reverse states ‘Zwischen Lens und Arras’ and ‘Laden eines 21 cm.-Mörsers im Kampfgebiet vor Arras’.
This translates approximately as ‘Between Lens and Arras’ and ‘Loading a 21 cm mortar in the combat area near Arras’.
The 21 cm Mörser formed part of the German Army’s heavy artillery and was used during the First World War against fortifications, trenches and other enemy positions.
The photograph provides a particularly clear view of the gun crew, heavy artillery piece and the conditions in which German artillery operated on the Western Front.
The reverse also bears the original W. Meissner, Berlin SW.68, Zimmerstrasse 72/74 stamp.

Originele Duitse legerfoto uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog van Duitse artilleristen bij een zware 21 cm Mörser in het gevechtsgebied bij Arras

Op de foto zijn meerdere Duitse militairen te zien die gezamenlijk een zware granaat bij het geschut hanteren tijdens het laden.
Het originele bijschrift op de achterzijde vermeldt ‘Zwischen Lens und Arras’ en ‘Laden eines 21 cm.-Mörsers im Kampfgebiet vor Arras’.
Vrij vertaald betekent dit ‘Tussen Lens en Arras’ en ‘Het laden van een 21 cm mortier in het gevechtsgebied voor Arras’.
De 21 cm Mörser behoorde tot de zware Duitse artillerie en werd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog ingezet tegen versterkingen, loopgraven en andere vijandelijke posities.
De opname geeft een bijzonder duidelijk beeld van de bemanning, het zware geschut en de omstandigheden waarin de Duitse artillerie aan het Westfront opereerde.
Op de achterzijde bevindt zich tevens de originele stempel van W. Meissner, Berlin SW.68, Zimmerstrasse 72/74.
