Original WWII Canadian issue of ‘The Maple Leaf’, the military newspaper published for Canadian Forces in Europe.
This is Volume 3, number 18, issued in Brussels on Monday, April 16, 1945.
The front page is dominated by the large headline ‘CANADIAN UNITS THROUGH TO NORTH SEA’, reporting on the Canadian advance during the liberation of the Netherlands.
Of particular interest is the article ‘Zwolle, Meppel Captured In Quick Advance; Heavy Fighting In Apeldoorn Area’.
The article reports extensively on the Canadian advance through the Netherlands and the heavy fighting taking place in the Apeldoorn area.
It mentions Canadian reconnaissance formations advancing north of Terrand and describes the 3rd Canadian Division making one of the largest advances of the Dutch campaign towards Heerenveen.
The newspaper also reports the capture of Zwolle and Meppel by Canadian forces and increasingly heavy resistance in and around Apeldoorn.
This issue was published during the final phase of the liberation of the Netherlands, only weeks before the German surrender.
Other subjects include fighting in the Ruhr Pocket, the capture of Franz von Papen, the Allied advance into Germany, Russian gains in Austria and other international wartime developments.

Originele WWII Canadese editie van de militaire krant ‘The Maple Leaf’, uitgegeven voor de Canadese strijdkrachten in Europa

Het betreft Volume 3, nummer 18, uitgegeven in Brussel op maandag 16 april 1945.
De voorpagina wordt gedomineerd door de grote kop ‘CANADIAN UNITS THROUGH TO NORTH SEA’, over de Canadese opmars tijdens de bevrijding van Nederland.
Bijzonder interessant is het artikel ‘Zwolle, Meppel Captured In Quick Advance; Heavy Fighting In Apeldoorn Area’.
Hierin wordt uitgebreid bericht over de Canadese opmars door Nederland en de zware gevechten in de omgeving van Apeldoorn.
Het artikel vermeldt dat Canadese verkenningseenheden ten noorden van Terrand waren doorgedrongen en dat de 3rd Canadian Division tijdens de campagne een van de grootste opmarsen maakte richting Heerenveen.
Ook wordt beschreven dat Canadese troepen Zwolle en Meppel hadden ingenomen en dat het verzet in en rond Apeldoorn heviger werd.

‘The Maple Leaf’ was een krant voor Canadese militairen en vormde tijdens de oorlog een belangrijke bron van nieuws over de geallieerde operaties en gebeurtenissen aan het front.
Het exemplaar verkeert in gebruikte staat met vouwen, verkleuringen en gebruikssporen, zoals zichtbaar op de foto’s.
Een interessant origineel Canadees bevrijdingsdocument met een directe historische verbinding met de gevechten rond Apeldoorn en de Canadese bevrijding van Nederland in april 1945.
