Rare original WWII Chinese-English military dictionary titled ‘Chinese and English Modern Military Dictionary’, published in 1942 under the auspices of the Directorate of Military Intelligence, General Headquarters, India.
This extensive military reference work contains approximately 6,500 terms relating to the Army, Navy, Air Force and military technical terminology in both Chinese and English.
The dictionary was originally compiled by Captain J. V. Davidson-Houston, R.E. and Lieutenant R. V. Dewar-Durie, A. & S.H. and was originally published in Peiping in 1934.
This rare wartime edition was revised by Major R. V. Dewar-Durie in Chungking in 1942 and republished under the auspices of the British Directorate of Military Intelligence in India.
The book was printed in 1942 by Calcutta General Printing Co. Ltd., The Edinburgh Press, at 300 Bowbazar Street in Calcutta.
In addition to its extensive military terminology, the book contains several appendices with information for identifying and interpreting armed forces, military ranks and equipment.
Of particular interest are the coloured identification plates showing Japanese Army rank insignia, including General, Lieutenant-General, Major-General, Colonel, Lieutenant-Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant-Major, Sergeant, Corporal and several enlisted ranks.
This information made the book a valuable military reference and intelligence work within the Asian theatre during the Second World War.
