Original WWII US Army 2nd Infantry Division ‘Indian Head’ shoulder Patch

Original WWII US Army shoulder patch of the 2nd Infantry Division, widely known as the ‘Indian Head Division’.
The insignia consists of a black shield with a large white five-pointed star and a red and blue embroidered Native American head with feathered headdress in the centre.
The insignia of the 2nd Infantry Division originated during the First World War and was worn as the distinctive divisional insignia during the Second World War.
The 2nd Infantry Division landed on Omaha Beach on 7 June 1944, D-Day +1, and subsequently fought in Normandy, Brittany, the Ardennes, Germany and Czechoslovakia.
This example features embroidered construction with a so-called ‘white back’, with the light-coloured embroidery threads clearly visible on the reverse.
The edges show traces of removal from a uniform and the original construction of the insignia remains clearly visible on the reverse.

Het embleem bestaat uit een zwart schild met een grote witte vijfpuntige ster en centraal het rood-blauw geborduurde hoofd van een Native American met verentooi.
Het embleem van de 2nd Infantry Division vindt zijn oorsprong in de Eerste Wereldoorlog en werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog als herkenbaar divisie-embleem gedragen.
De 2nd Infantry Division landde op 7 juni 1944, D-Day +1, op Omaha Beach en vocht vervolgens onder meer in Normandië, Bretagne, de Ardennen, Duitsland en Tsjechoslowakije.
