The US 82nd Airborne Division

The 82nd Airborne Division was an elite airborne division of the United States Army that played a crucial role during World War II.
Originally established as a regular infantry division, it was converted into an airborne division in 1942, specializing in parachute and glider operations.
The division took part in some of the most critical battles in Europe. During Operation Husky (July 1943), they conducted their first combat drop in Sicily.
Later, they played a key role in the D-Day landings (June 6, 1944), parachuting deep behind enemy lines in Normandy to seize strategic bridges and roads.
In Operation Market Garden(September 1944), the division was deployed in the Netherlands to secure bridges near Nijmegen, though the operation ultimately failed.

De 82nd Airborne Division was een elite luchtlandingsdivisie van het Amerikaanse leger die een cruciale rol speelde tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Opgericht als een reguliere infanteriedivisie, werd de eenheid in 1942 omgevormd tot een luchtlandingsdivisie, gespecialiseerd in parachute- en zweefvliegtuigoperaties.
De divisie nam deel aan enkele van de meest cruciale gevechten in Europa.
Tijdens Operatie Husky (juli 1943) voerden ze hun eerste gevechtsdropping uit in Sicilië.
