Original WWII US 5th army ashtray

The American Ashtray is made of ceramic and was used by the soldiers of the 5th Army during World War II.
In September 1943, during the landings at Salerno (Italy), the Fifth Army first came into action.
The Fifth Army consisted of the British 10th Army Corps and the US 6th Army Corps.
By the time the Germans withdrew behind the Gustav line, the Fifth Army was reinforced with the US 2nd Army Corps. The first attacks on Monte Cassino failed.
On June 4, 1944, the 5th Army liberated Rome.
This was followed by the fighting for the Gothic Line.
In December 1944, General Clark was appointed commander of the 15th Army Group and was succeeded as commander of the 5th Army by General Lucian Truscott.
In the spring of 1945 the 2nd Army Corps advanced towards Milan and Genoa and the 4th Army Corps towards Verona, Vicenza and the Brenner Pass. On October 2, 1945, the 5th Army was disbanded.

De Amerikaanse asbak is gemaakt van keramiek en werd gebruikt door de soldaten van de 5th Army tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
In september 1943 tijdens de landingen bij Salerno (Italië) kwam het Vijfde Leger voor het eerst in actie.
Het Vijfde Leger bestond uit het Britse 10e Legerkorps en het Amerikaanse 6e Legerkorps.
Tegen de tijd dat de Duitsers zich achter de Gustav-linie terugtrokken werd het Vijfde Leger versterkt met het Amerikaanse 2e Legerkorps. De eerste aanvallen op Monte Cassino mislukte.
Op 4 juni 1944 bevrijdde het 5e Leger Rome.
Daarna volgde de gevechten om de Gotische Linie.
In december 1944 werd generaal Clark benoemd tot bevelhebber van de 15e Legergroep en werd als bevelhebber van het 5e Leger opgevolgd door generaal Lucian Truscott. In het voorjaar van 1945 rukten het 2e Legerkorps op richting Milaan en Genoa en het 4e Legerkorps richting Verona, Vicenza en de Brennerpas. Op 2 oktober 1945 werd het 5e Leger ontbonden.
