The US 101st Airborne Division

The 101st Airborne Division, also known as the “Screaming Eagles”, was an elite airborne division of the United States Army that played a key role in the Allied campaign in Europe. Established in 1942, the division was trained for parachute and glider operations, allowing them to be deployed deep into enemy territory.
Their first major action took place on D-Day (June 6, 1944), when they were dropped behind German lines in Normandyto secure crucial roads, bridges, and towns such as Carentan. Later, the division participated in Operation Market Garden (September 1944), fighting to capture bridges in the Netherlands, particularly near Eindhoven.
Their most famous engagement occurred during the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944 – January 1945), where the 101st was surrounded in Bastogne and held out against intense German attacks.
Despite freezing conditions and shortages of ammunition and food, they refused to surrender.
The famous response of Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe to a German surrender ultimatum was simply: “Nuts!”—a testament to their determination.
The 101st Airborne Division earned legendary status for its bravery and resilience.
Their actions contributed to the ultimate Allied victory and made them one of the most iconic units of World War II.

De 101st Airborne Division, ook bekend als de “Screaming Eagles”, was een elite luchtlandingsdivisie van het Amerikaanse leger die een sleutelrol speelde in de geallieerde strijd in Europa.
Opgericht in 1942, werd de divisie getraind voor parachute- en zweefvliegtuigoperaties, waarmee ze in vijandelijk gebied konden worden ingezet.
Hun eerste grote actie vond plaats op D-Day (6 juni 1944), toen ze achter de Duitse linies in Normandië werden gedropt om cruciale wegen, bruggen en steden, zoals Carentan, veilig te stellen.
Later nam de divisie deel aan Operatie Market Garden (september 1944), waar ze vocht om bruggen in Nederland, met name bij Eindhoven, in handen te krijgen.
