Original WWII Polish photo of the capture of Monte Cassino in Italy

Original Second World War press photograph showing the Polish flag being raised on the summit of Monte Cassino following its capture by the Polish II Corps.
The reverse is handwritten with the text ‘Flaga polska na szczycie Monte Cassino dn. 18 maja 1944 r. godz. 10.20’, dating the historic event to 18 May 1944 at 10:20.
The reverse also bears a stamp from the Polish military photographic section together with the English censorship stamp ‘Passed as fit for publication – Field Press Censor’.
The photograph depicts the ruined remains of Monte Cassino Abbey with a Polish soldier standing beside the raised national flag.
The Battle of Monte Cassino was one of the most significant Allied operations of the Italian Campaign and marked an important achievement for the Polish II Corps under the command of General Władysław Anders.

De achterzijde is handgeschreven voorzien van de tekst ‘Flaga polska na szczycie Monte Cassino dn. 18 maja 1944 r. godz. 10.20’, waarmee de historische gebeurtenis wordt gedateerd op 18 mei 1944 om 10.20 uur.
Daarnaast bevindt zich op de achterzijde een stempel van de Poolse militaire fotografische dienst en een Engelstalige censorstempel ‘Passed as fit for publication – Field Press Censor’.
De foto toont de verwoeste resten van de abdij van Monte Cassino met een Poolse militair naast de gehesen nationale vlag.
