Original WWII German Propaganda Leaflet ‘Death Awaits Him!’ American Soldiers

35

Original WWII German propaganda leaflet aimed at American servicemen fighting in Europe during the Second World War.
The front features a dramatic illustration of a woman and child standing near the water, while a large skull appears ominously in the background.
Below the illustration is the threatening phrase ‘Death awaits him!’, directly exploiting the fears of American servicemen and the families they had left behind.
The reverse carries the prominent heading ‘Is your life worth 1.000 bucks?’ and contains an extensive English-language propaganda message.
The text asks the American serviceman why he is fighting in Europe and why he should risk his life in the war.
The propaganda then claims that American soldiers are expected to die for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin.
Separate passages including ‘You’ve got to die for F.D.R.’, ‘You’ve got to die for Churchill’ and ‘You’ve got to die for Stalin’ were intended to create distrust towards the Allied political leadership.
The leaflet also refers directly to the loved ones left behind in America and the grief that the soldier’s death could cause them.
At the bottom, the serviceman is encouraged to stop fighting and surrender to German forces, with promises of good treatment and the possibility of eventually returning to his loved ones.
The printed code ‘AW 50’ appears in the lower right corner.
Leaflets of this type formed part of German psychological warfare and were intended to undermine Allied morale and encourage soldiers to surrender.
The example is in used condition with fold marks, discoloration and other signs of use clearly visible in the photos.
An interesting original example of German psychological warfare specifically directed at American troops fighting on the European front.
Perfect for your militaria or World War II collection!
