Original WWII German Propaganda Leaflet ‘Beach-Head – Death’s Head’ Anzio 1944

Original German propaganda leaflet from the Second World War, aimed at British and American servicemen during the fighting around the Allied beachhead at Anzio in Italy.
The front features a striking graphic depiction of a large skull rising from the sea, combined with a map of the area around Anzio, Aprilia, Cisterna, Via Appia and Isola Bella.
Above and below the skull are the words ‘Beach-Head’ and ‘Death’s Head!’, portraying the Allied beachhead as a place of death and destruction.
The English-language reverse directly refers to the Allied beachhead and claims that after three months it remained merely a beachhead, but was now paved with the skulls of thousands of British and American soldiers.
The leaflet was intended to undermine Allied morale and increase fear of further casualties during the fighting around Anzio.
The Anzio landings took place on 22 January 1944 as part of Operation Shingle, intended to bypass German defensive positions in Italy and support the Allied advance towards Rome.
The printing code ‘AI-064-4-44’ appears at the bottom and dates the leaflet to April 1944.
The combination of the colourful skull illustration, map of the Anzio area and text directly targeting British and American troops makes this a particularly graphic example of German psychological warfare on the Italian Front.
The leaflet remains in good used condition with fold lines, minor damage and traces of use clearly visible in the photos.

Origineel Duits propaganda strooibiljet uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, gericht op Britse en Amerikaanse militairen tijdens de gevechten rond het geallieerde bruggenhoofd bij Anzio in Italië

De voorzijde heeft een opvallende grafische voorstelling van een grote schedel die uit zee oprijst, gecombineerd met een kaart van het gebied rond Anzio, Aprilia, Cisterna, Via Appia en Isola Bella.
Boven en onder de schedel staan de teksten ‘Beach-Head’ en ‘Death’s Head!’, waarmee het geallieerde bruggenhoofd als een plaats van dood en vernietiging wordt voorgesteld.
De Engelstalige keerzijde verwijst rechtstreeks naar het geallieerde bruggenhoofd en beweert dat het na drie maanden nog altijd slechts een beach-head was, maar inmiddels bezaaid zou zijn met de schedels van duizenden Britse en Amerikaanse soldaten.
Het strooibiljet probeerde hiermee het moreel van geallieerde militairen te ondermijnen en angst voor verdere verliezen bij Anzio aan te wakkeren.
De landing bij Anzio vond plaats op 22 januari 1944 als onderdeel van Operation Shingle en had als doel de Duitse verdedigingslinies in Italië te omzeilen en de opmars richting Rome te ondersteunen.
Onderaan staat de drukcode ‘AI-064-4-44’, die het pamflet in april 1944 dateert.
De combinatie van de kleurrijke schedelillustratie, de kaart van het Anzio-gebied en de direct tegen Britse en Amerikaanse militairen gerichte tekst maakt dit een bijzonder grafisch voorbeeld van Duitse psychologische oorlogsvoering aan het Italiaanse front.
Het strooibiljet verkeert in goede gebruikte conditie met vouwlijnen, lichte beschadigingen en gebruikssporen die duidelijk op de foto’s zichtbaar zijn.
