Original German photograph from the Second World War, taken in The Hague during the German occupation of the Netherlands.
The photograph shows a building with a clearly visible sign relating to the air raid protection service.
The sign reads ‘Luchtbeschermingsdienst – Posten – Brandweer – Geneeskundige Dienst – Öffentlicher Luftschutz’.
The combination of Dutch and German wording identifies the location as a post for the fire brigade, medical service and public air raid protection organization.
Such air raid protection posts formed part of the wartime organization used during air raids, fires and other emergencies.
Several bicycles can be seen beside the building, while part of a large ‘Garage’ sign is visible above.
The reverse carries a handwritten notation referring to The Hague.

De foto toont een gebouw met een duidelijk zichtbaar bord van de luchtbeschermingsdienst.
Op het bord staat ‘Luchtbeschermingsdienst – Posten – Brandweer – Geneeskundige Dienst – Öffentlicher Luftschutz’.
De combinatie van Nederlandse en Duitse tekst laat zien dat de locatie werd aangeduid als post voor de brandweer, geneeskundige dienst en openbare luchtbescherming.
Dergelijke luchtbeschermingsposten maakten deel uit van de organisatie die tijdens de oorlog werd ingezet bij luchtaanvallen, branden en andere noodsituaties.
Naast het gebouw staan verschillende fietsen en bovenaan is een deel van een groot bord met de tekst ‘Garage’ zichtbaar.
Op de achterzijde staat een handgeschreven aanduiding die naar Den Haag verwijst.
