The Capitulation of the Netherlands in Rijsoord (1940)

On May 15, 1940, after five days of fierce fighting against the German army, the Netherlands capitulated during World War II. The surrender took place in a school building in the village of Rijsoord, near Ridderkerk. General Henri Winkelman, commander-in-chief of the Dutch armed forces, signed the capitulation there. The decision followed the devastating bombing of Rotterdam on May 14 and the threat of further destruction. With the signing, fighting officially ended in most of the country, although combat in Zeeland continued briefly. The capitulation in Rijsoord marked the beginning of the German occupation, which would last until 1945.

De Capitulatie van Nederland in Rijsoord (1940)

Op 15 mei 1940, na vijf dagen van felle gevechten tegen het Duitse leger, capituleerde Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De overgave vond plaats in een schoolgebouw in het dorp Rijsoord, nabij Ridderkerk. Generaal Henri Winkelman, opperbevelhebber van het Nederlandse leger, ondertekende daar de capitulatie. De beslissing kwam na het zware bombardement op Rotterdam op 14 mei en de dreiging van verdere verwoestingen. Met deze ondertekening kwam er een officieel einde aan de strijd in het grootste deel van Nederland, al werd er in Zeeland nog kort gevochten. De capitulatie in Rijsoord markeerde het begin van de Duitse bezetting, die tot 1945 zou duren.
