This large size German photograph is in good condition, was taken in 1945 and shows the buildings which were destroyed during the battle of Berlin.
This photo was taken by German photographer Martin Badekow, who had a studio in Berlin before and during the war.

The battle for Berlin

The Battle of Berlin (April–May 1945) marked the downfall of Nazi Germany and brought unprecedented destruction to the German capital. As the Red Army entered the city from all directions, many historic buildings were heavily damaged or completely destroyed. Berlin turned into a city of ruins, where culture, history, and everyday life were literally reduced to rubble.

In this photo, we see an imposing neoclassical building, with its roof and façades severely damaged. The scars of artillery strikes are clearly visible on the walls, windows are missing, and the roof has partially collapsed or been blown away, leaving only a skeletal metal frame. The building stands as a symbol of the total dismantling of a once-proud city.

Amid this chaos and destruction, the image reveals the harsh reality of war: even the most stately and cultural landmarks are not spared. The Battle of Berlin was not just a military victory, but also a tragedy that left deep scars in the heart of Europe.

Deze groot formaat Duitse foto is in goede conditie, werd gemaakt in 1945 en daarop zijn gebouwen te zien welke tijdens de slag om Berlijn beschadigd raakte.
Deze foto werd gemaakt door de Duitse fotograaf Martin Badekow, welke voor en tijdens de oorlog een atelier had in Berlijn.

De Slag om Berlijn

De Slag om Berlijn (april–mei 1945) luidde het einde in van Nazi-Duitsland en bracht een ongekende verwoesting over de Duitse hoofdstad. Terwijl het Rode Leger de stad vanuit alle richtingen binnendrong, werden veel historische gebouwen zwaar beschadigd of volledig verwoest. Berlijn veranderde in een ruïneuze stad, waarin cultuur, geschiedenis en dagelijks leven letterlijk in puin lagen.

Op deze foto zien we een indrukwekkend neoklassiek gebouw, waarvan het dak en de gevels ernstig zijn beschadigd. De sporen van artillerie-inslagen zijn duidelijk zichtbaar in de muren, ramen zijn verdwenen, en het dak is deels ingestort of weggevaagd, met enkel het metalen geraamte nog zichtbaar. Het gebouw lijkt symbool te staan voor de complete ontmanteling van een ooit trotse stad.

Midden in deze chaos en verwoesting toont de foto de bittere realiteit van oorlog: zelfs de meest statige en culturele centra blijven niet gespaard. De Slag om Berlijn was niet alleen een militaire overwinning, maar ook een tragedie die diepe sporen naliet in het hart van Europa.
