This large size German photograph is in good condition, was taken in 1945 and shows the buildings which were destroyed during the battle of Berlin.
This photo was taken by German photographer Martin Badekow, who had a studio in Berlin before and during the war.

The battle for Berlin

The Battle of Berlin (April–May 1945) was the final chapter of World War II in Europe. As Soviet troops entered the city from all sides, Berlin became a battlefield filled with rubble, destroyed buildings, and human suffering. Every street, square, and structure could become the scene of intense combat.

In this photo, we see a heavily damaged classical building—likely a university or government building—with a statue of a seated figure in front, probably a philosopher, scientist, or writer. The contrast is striking: the statue radiates calm and intellect, while the structure behind it bears the scars of war and destruction. Deze groot formaat Duitse foto is in goede conditie, werd gemaakt in 1945 en daarop zijn gebouwen te zien welke tijdens de slag om Berlijn beschadigd raakte.
Deze foto werd gemaakt door de Duitse fotograaf Martin Badekow, welke voor en tijdens de oorlog een atelier had in Berlijn.

De Slag om Berlijn

De Slag om Berlijn (april–mei 1945) was het sluitstuk van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa. Terwijl Sovjettroepen de stad van alle kanten binnendrongen, veranderde Berlijn in een slagveld vol puin, verwoeste gebouwen en menselijke ellende. Elke straat, elk plein en elk gebouw kon het toneel worden van hevige gevechten.
Op deze foto zien we een zwaar beschadigd klassiek gebouw, vermoedelijk een universiteits- of regeringsgebouw, met ervoor een standbeeld van een zittende figuur – waarschijnlijk een filosoof, wetenschapper of schrijver. De contrasten zijn pijnlijk: het beeld straalt rust en intellect uit, terwijl het gebouw erachter tekenen draagt van oorlog en vernietiging. Kapotte ramen, beschadigde gevels en sporen van granaatinslagen getuigen van de hevige strijd die hier heeft gewoed.
Dit beeld symboliseert het tragische verlies van cultuur en beschaving in tijden van oorlog. De Slag om Berlijn betekende niet alleen het einde van een regime, maar ook het begin van een lange wederopbouw – zowel fysiek als moreel.
