This large size German photograph is in good condition, was taken in 1945 and shows the buildings which were destroyed during the battle of Berlin.
This photo was taken by German photographer Martin Badekow, who had a studio in Berlin before and during the war.

The battle for Berlin

The Battle of Berlin (April–May 1945) was the final major offensive of World War II in Europe. As the Red Army encircled the German capital, Berlin became the stage for brutal street fighting, bombardments, and widespread destruction. The battle marked not only the military collapse of the Third Reich but also the symbolic downfall of Nazi Germany.
In this photo, we see a grand classical building, heavily damaged by artillery and bombing. The roof has partially collapsed, windows are shattered, and a pile of rubble—including the wreckage of a vehicle—lies in front of the structure. This image reflects not only the physical devastation but also the deep scars left on Berlin’s cultural and historical landmarks.
Buildings like this, once symbols of power, culture, or governance, were reduced to ruins during the war’s final weeks.

Deze groot formaat Duitse foto is in goede conditie, werd gemaakt in 1945 en daarop zijn gebouwen te zien welke tijdens de slag om Berlijn beschadigd raakte.
Deze foto werd gemaakt door de Duitse fotograaf Martin Badekow, welke voor en tijdens de oorlog een atelier had in Berlijn.

De Slag om Berlijn

De Slag om Berlijn (april–mei 1945) was het laatste grote offensief van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa. Terwijl het Rode Leger de Duitse hoofdstad omsingelde, werd Berlijn het toneel van hevige straatgevechten, bombardementen en verwoesting. De strijd betekende niet alleen het militaire einde van het Derde Rijk, maar ook het symbolische failliet van Nazi-Duitsland.
Op deze foto zien we een imposant klassiek gebouw, zwaar beschadigd door artillerie- en bominslagen. Het dak is deels ingestort, ramen zijn eruit geblazen en voor het gebouw ligt een berg puin, waaronder wrakstukken van een voertuig. Dit beeld toont niet alleen de fysieke schade, maar ook de diepe sporen die de oorlog achterliet op het culturele en historische erfgoed van Berlijn.
Gebouwen als deze, ooit symbolen van macht, cultuur of bestuur, veranderden in ruïnes tijdens de laatste weken van de oorlog.
De foto herinnert ons aan de verwoestende kracht van oorlog – en aan de wederopbouw die daarop volgde.
