Original WWII German photo of Berlin in 1945

This large size German photograph is in good condition, was taken in 1945 and shows the buildings which were destroyed during the battle of Berlin.
This photo was taken by German photographer Martin Badekow, who had a studio in Berlin before and during the war.

The battle for Berlin

During the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945, the German capital became the scene of intense fighting. Buildings, bridges, and entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble through artillery shelling, air raids, and brutal street combat.

In this photo, we see the ruins of a brick building, almost completely burned out and collapsed. Part of the facade still stands, but it bears the clear marks of shell impacts, fire damage, and structural failure. What may once have been a church, theater, or government building now stands like a hollow shell in the middle of Berlin’s shattered streets.

This image is a powerful reminder of the cost of war—not only in human lives, but also in the loss of architecture, history, and culture.

Originele WWII Duitse groot formaat foto Berlijn in 1945

Deze groot formaat Duitse foto is in goede conditie, werd gemaakt in 1945 en daarop zijn gebouwen te zien welke tijdens de slag om Berlijn beschadigd raakte.
Deze foto werd gemaakt door de Duitse fotograaf Martin Badekow, welke voor en tijdens de oorlog een atelier had in Berlijn.

De Slag om Berlijn

Tijdens de Slag om Berlijn in april en mei 1945 werd de Duitse hoofdstad het toneel van hevige gevechten, waarbij gebouwen, bruggen en complete wijken in puin werden gelegd. De combinatie van artilleriebeschietingen, luchtaanvallen en gevechten van straat tot straat liet diepe littekens achter in het stadsbeeld.

Op deze foto zien we de ruïne van een bakstenen gebouw, dat vrijwel volledig is uitgebrand en ingestort. De gevel is deels overeind gebleven, maar overal zijn sporen van granaatinslagen, vuur en instorting zichtbaar. Wat ooit misschien een kerk, theater of overheidsgebouw was, staat nu als een karkas midden in de verlaten straten van een kapotgeschoten Berlijn.

Dit beeld is een krachtige herinnering aan de tol van oorlog – niet alleen in mensenlevens, maar ook in het verlies van architectuur, geschiedenis en cultuur.
