This large size German photograph is in good condition, was taken in 1945 and shows the buildings which were destroyed during the battle of Berlin.
This photo was taken by German photographer Martin Badekow, who had a studio in Berlin before and during the war.

The battle for Berlin

The Battle of Berlin, in April and May 1945, marked the fall of the Third Reich, but it came with unprecedented destruction. Streets and buildings in central Berlin were turned into ruins by heavy artillery fire, air raids, and brutal street fighting between the Red Army and the last German defenders.

In this photo, we see a heavily damaged building, likely once a city palace, administrative building, or hotel. The front façade is partially collapsed, the roof is gone, and the walls are riddled with shell impacts. Amid the rubble, tram tracks curve toward a battered tram car—an eerie remnant of a city brought to a standstill.

This image captures not only the physical devastation, but also the emptiness and abandonment that war leaves behind. Once a vibrant corner of the city, now a silent witness to the collapse of a regime.

Deze groot formaat Duitse foto is in goede conditie, werd gemaakt in 1945 en daarop zijn gebouwen te zien welke tijdens de slag om Berlijn beschadigd raakte.
Deze foto werd gemaakt door de Duitse fotograaf Martin Badekow, welke voor en tijdens de oorlog een atelier had in Berlijn.

De Slag om Berlijn

De Slag om Berlijn in april en mei 1945 betekende het einde van het Derde Rijk, maar ging gepaard met ongekende verwoesting. Straten en gebouwen in het centrum van Berlijn veranderden in ruïnes door hevige artilleriebeschietingen, luchtaanvallen en straatgevechten tussen het Rode Leger en de laatste Duitse verdedigers.

Op deze foto zien we een zwaar beschadigd gebouw, waarschijnlijk ooit een stadspaleis, administratief gebouw of hotel. De voorgevel is gedeeltelijk ingestort, het dak is verdwenen, en de gevels zijn doorzeefd met granaatschade. Te midden van het puin loopt een tramspoor, en er staat een beschadigde tramwagon, een spookachtig overblijfsel van een stilgevallen stad.

Deze afbeelding toont niet alleen de fysieke schade, maar ook de leegte en verlatenheid die oorlog met zich meebrengt. Ooit een bruisend stukje stad, nu een stille getuige van de ondergang van een regime.
