Original WWII German documents set of Karl Gaulhofer in Amsterdam

This set of 21 German documents is in good condition and concerns the questionnaire and many other interesting documents of Karl Leopold Gaulhofer in Amsterdam during World War II.
Almost all of them came from Der Reichskommissar fur die besetzten Niederlandischen Gebiete – Der Generalkommissar fur verwaltung und Justiz.

Karl Leopold Gaulhofer

Karl Leopold Gaulhofer (1885–1941) was an influential Austrian educator, known for his reforms in physical education, particularly through the development of “natural gymnastics” together with Margarete Streicher. This innovative approach focused on child-friendly, natural, and less authoritarian forms of movement and was widely adopted in Austrian schools.
However, alongside his pedagogical work, Gaulhofer also played a controversial role in promoting eugenics in Austria. He was a supporter of “racial hygiene” and involved in institutions concerned with heredity and racial purity.
In 1938, he joined the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers’ Party), shortly after the Anschluss, when Austria was annexed by Germany.
During the Second World War, Gaulhofer was appointed as a consultant to the Reich Commissioner in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. In this position, he contributed to organizing education and physical training in line with National Socialist ideology. He continued to promote his ideas about education and racial theory there as well.
He died in 1941 in Amsterdam, while working in service of the Nazi regime. After his death, Nazi publications praised him as a “fighter for the Third Reich.” In 1968, a street in Vienna was named after him — Gaulhofergasse — though this naming has since become controversial. Historians today criticize his active role in Nazi ideology and his contribution to spreading racist and eugenic concepts under the guise of educational reform.

Deze set van 21 Duitse documenten is in goede conditie en betreft de vragenlijst en vele andere interessante documenten van Karl Leopold Gaulhofer in Amsterdam tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
Bijna allen zijn afkomstig van Der Reichskommissar fur die besetzten Niederlandischen Gebiete – Der Generalkommissar fur verwaltung und Justiz.

Karl Leopold Gaulhofer

Karl Leopold Gaulhofer (1885–1941) was een invloedrijke Oostenrijkse pedagoog, bekend om zijn hervormingen in de lichamelijke opvoeding, met name door het ontwikkelen van het “natuurlijk turnen” samen met Margarete Streicher.
Dit vernieuwende model richtte zich op een kindvriendelijke, natuurlijke en minder autoritaire vorm van beweging, en werd wijdverspreid in Oostenrijkse scholen.
Naast zijn pedagogische werk speelde Gaulhofer echter ook een omstreden rol in de opkomst van de eugenetica in Oostenrijk. Hij was voorstander van “rassenhygiëne” en betrokken bij instellingen die zich bezighielden met erfelijkheid en rassenzuiverheid. In 1938 werd hij lid van de NSDAP (de Nationaalsocialistische Duitse Arbeiderspartij), kort na de Anschluss, waarbij Oostenrijk werd geannexeerd door Duitsland.
Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd Gaulhofer aangesteld als referent bij de Reichskommissar in het door nazi-Duitsland bezette Nederland. In die functie werkte hij mee aan de organisatie van onderwijs en lichamelijke opvoeding binnen het nationaalsocialistische kader.
Hij bleef zijn ideeën over opvoeding en rassenleer ook daar uitdragen.
Hij overleed in 1941 in Amsterdam, waar hij in dienst van het naziregime werkte. Na zijn dood werd hij in nazi-publicaties geprezen als een “strijder voor het Derde Rijk”. In 1968 werd er in Wenen zelfs een straat naar hem vernoemd, de Gaulhofergasse, al is die vernoeming later omstreden geworden. Historici bekritiseren vandaag de dag zijn actieve rol in de nazi-ideologie en zijn bijdrage aan de verspreiding van racistische en eugenetische ideeën onder het mom van onderwijsvernieuwing.
