This French photograph from the Second World War shows a historic moment involving the Légion des Volontaires Français (L.V.F.), a French volunteer formation that, from 1941 onward, fought alongside Germany on the Eastern Front.
The image depicts a group of French volunteers leaning out of the windows of a railway carriage, waving farewell, while the markings “L.V.F.” and the chalk-written text “Paris–Moscou” are clearly visible on the side of the wagon. This reflects the ideological and anti-communist character of the unit and the intended purpose of its deployment against the Soviet Union.
The reverse of the photograph is extensively documented with handwritten French notes, Paris press stamps, and official censorship and approval markings, including a clear date of July 1942.

Deze Franse foto uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog toont een historisch moment rond de Légion
des Volontaires Français (L.V.F.), een Franse vrijwilligersformatie die vanaf 1941 aan Duitse zijde aan het oostfront werd ingezet. De foto laat een groep Franse vrijwilligers zien die uit de ramen van een treinwagon hangen en afscheid nemen, terwijl op de zijkant van de wagon duidelijk de aanduiding “L.V.F.” en de met krijt geschreven tekst “Paris–Moscou” zichtbaar zijn. Dit toont het ideologische en anticommunistische karakter van de eenheid en het doel van hun inzet tegen de Sovjet-Unie.
