Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog speelde Charles de Gaulle een centrale rol als leider van de Vrije Franse Strijdkrachten. Hij verzette zich fel tegen de wapenstilstand met Duitsland en riep vanuit Londen het Franse volk op om de strijd voort te zetten. Gedurende de oorlog bleef hij het politieke en symbolische middelpunt van het Franse verzet en werd hij na de bevrijding een van de belangrijkste architecten van het herstel van Frankrijk.
