The Yule Festival (Julfest)

The Yule Festival, or Julfest in German, is a traditional midwinter celebration that originated in Germanic paganism. It was held around the winter solstice, usually in December, to honor the return of the light. The festival centered around fire, food, togetherness, and rituals. During the Nazi regime in Germany, the Yule Festival was reintroduced as an alternative to Christmas, with the aim of replacing Christian elements with Germanic symbolism. In that context, the celebration took on an ideological character, emphasizing light symbolism, nature worship, and so-called “Aryan traditions.”

Het Julfeest (Julfest)

Het Julfeest, of Julfest in het Duits, is een traditioneel midwinterfeest dat zijn oorsprong vindt in het Germaanse heidendom. Het werd rond de winterzonnewende gevierd, meestal in december, om het terugkeren van het licht te eren. Tijdens het Julfeest stonden vuur, eten, samenzijn en rituelen centraal. In de tijd van het naziregime in Duitsland werd het Julfeest opnieuw geïntroduceerd als alternatief voor Kerstmis, met de bedoeling om christelijke elementen te vervangen door Germaanse symboliek. In die context kreeg het feest een ideologische lading, waarbij lichtsymboliek, natuurverering en ‘arische tradities’ werden benadrukt.
