Original Dutch resistance newspaper ‘Op Wacht’ from the Second World War.
This illegal underground publication was distributed in The Hague and surrounding areas and is dated Saturday, 28 April 1945, only days before the German surrender in the Netherlands.
This example is issue No. 86 and was published in cooperation with ‘De Haagse Groene’.
The newspaper contains extensive reports from the final phase of the war, including the official announcement that American and Soviet forces had linked up at Torgau on the River Elbe, effectively splitting Germany in two.
It also reports on the fierce street fighting in Berlin, the rapid Allied advance through Germany and Austria, the capture of Ingolstadt, the situation around Bremen and the Soviet advance towards Berlin.
Additional articles cover the Italian campaign, the advance towards Milan and Turin and reports concerning the capture of Benito Mussolini.
The newspaper further includes reports on the food situation in the Netherlands, developments in The Hague, the evacuation of German administrative services, events in Amsterdam and Alblasserdam and numerous other military and political developments from the final days of the war.
Underground newspapers like this were secretly produced and distributed under extremely difficult circumstances and became an essential source of independent information for the Dutch population during the occupation.

Originele WWII Nederlandse verzetskrant ‘Op Wacht’ uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog Den Haag en omgeving

Deze illegale verzetsuitgave werd verspreid in Den Haag en omstreken en is gedateerd zaterdag 28 april 1945, slechts enkele dagen voor de Duitse capitulatie in Nederland.
Dit exemplaar betreft nummer 86 en werd uitgegeven in samenwerking met ‘De Haagse Groene’.
De krant bevat uitgebreid nieuws over de laatste fase van de oorlog en meldt onder meer het officiële bericht dat Amerikaanse en Sovjettroepen elkaar bij Torgau aan de rivier de Elbe hebben ontmoet, waarmee Duitsland feitelijk in tweeën werd gesplitst.
Daarnaast wordt verslag gedaan van de hevige straatgevechten in Berlijn, de snelle opmars van de geallieerden in Duitsland en Oostenrijk, de verovering van Ingolstadt, de situatie rond Bremen en de opmars van de Sovjettroepen richting Berlijn.
Ook wordt uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan de Italiaanse campagne, de opmars richting Milaan en Turijn en de berichten over de gevangenneming van Benito Mussolini.
Verder bevat de krant nieuws over de voedselsituatie in Nederland, de gevechten rond Den Haag, de evacuatie van Duitse diensten, de situatie in Amsterdam en Alblasserdam en diverse andere militaire en politieke ontwikkelingen uit de laatste oorlogsdagen.
Illegale verzetskranten als deze werden onder moeilijke omstandigheden in het geheim geproduceerd en verspreid en vormden een belangrijke bron van onafhankelijke informatie voor de Nederlandse bevolking tijdens de bezetting.
