Original WWII Australian Military Forces General Staff Intelligence ‘Japanese Equipment’ Manual – May 1944

Original Australian military intelligence booklet ‘Japanese Equipment’ from World War II, issued by the Australian Military Forces General Staff Intelligence in May 1944.
This rare illustrated reference manual was compiled to provide Allied military personnel with information about Japanese weapons, equipment, vehicles and other materiel encountered during operations in the Pacific theatre.
The foreword states that the first edition was published in July 1943 and that this edition incorporated additional information and illustrations.
The booklet covers numerous Japanese weapons including the Type 99 Infantry Rifle, Meiji 44 Carbine, Solothurn SMG, pistols, machine guns, hand grenades, grenade dischargers and several types of artillery.
It also contains detailed sections concerning Japanese tanks, amphibious vehicles, boats, respirators, gas equipment, flares and other military equipment.
Numerous pages contain photographs and detailed technical illustrations identifying individual components, dimensions, calibres and specifications.
One particularly interesting page illustrates a Japanese amphibious tank, while other sections describe equipment including the Type 91 105 mm Light Field Howitzer and Type 97 37 mm Rapid-Fire Gun.
The section concerning Japanese motor torpedo boats notes their resemblance to Dutch MTB designs and discusses the possibility that captured Dutch boats were converted and operated by Japanese forces.
The original blue cover bears the title ‘Japanese Equipment’, the Australian Military Forces insignia, the designation ‘General Staff Intelligence’ and the date ‘May 1944’.
The inside also retains a military stamp and the prominent instruction ‘Before Using – Amend as per Addendum Enclosed’, further supporting the military use of this example.

Origineel Australisch militair inlichtingenboekje ‘Japanese Equipment’ uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, uitgegeven door de Australian Military Forces General Staff Intelligence in mei 1944

Dit zeldzame geïllustreerde naslagwerk werd samengesteld om geallieerde militairen te informeren over Japanse wapens, uitrusting, voertuigen en ander materieel dat tijdens de oorlog in het Pacific-gebied kon worden aangetroffen.
Het voorwoord vermeldt dat de eerste editie in juli 1943 verscheen en dat deze uitgave werd uitgebreid met aanvullende informatie en illustraties.
Het boekje behandelt een groot aantal Japanse wapens, waaronder de Type 99 Infantry Rifle, Meiji 44 Carbine, Solothurn SMG, pistolen, machinegeweren, handgranaten, granaatwerpers en verschillende typen artillerie.
Daarnaast worden onder andere Japanse tanks, amfibische voertuigen, boten, gasmaskers, gasuitrusting, lichtkogels en andere militaire uitrustingsstukken uitvoerig beschreven.
Veel onderdelen zijn voorzien van foto’s en duidelijke technische tekeningen waarop afzonderlijke onderdelen, afmetingen, kalibers en technische gegevens worden aangegeven.
Een interessante pagina toont onder meer een Japans amfibisch pantservoertuig, terwijl andere pagina’s aandacht besteden aan de Type 91 105 mm Light Field Howitzer en Type 97 37 mm Rapid-Fire Gun.
Opvallend is ook de informatie over Japanse motor torpedo boats, waarbij wordt vermeld dat sommige exemplaren overeenkomsten vertoonden met Nederlandse MTB’s en mogelijk buitgemaakte Nederlandse vaartuigen waren die door de Japanners werden aangepast.
De oorspronkelijke blauwe omslag draagt de titel ‘Japanese Equipment’, het embleem van de Australian Military Forces, de aanduiding ‘General Staff Intelligence’ en de datering ‘May 1944’.
Aan de binnenzijde bevindt zich tevens een militaire stempel en een opvallende instructie ‘Before Using – Amend as per Addendum Enclosed’, wat het militaire gebruik van dit exemplaar verder onderstreept.
