Original German Army photograph from the First World War showing three captured Portuguese soldiers on the Western Front.
The three soldiers are standing side by side wearing their Portuguese uniforms and distinctive Portuguese steel helmets.
The original German caption on the reverse reads ‘Bilder von der Westfront’ and states that these were among the first Portuguese soldiers captured by the Germans on the Western Front.
According to the caption, the group consists of one NCO and two enlisted men, with two of the three reportedly being related to each other.
Portugal fought on the Allied side during World War I and deployed the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, or Corpo Expedicionário Português, to the Western Front in France and Belgium.
Portuguese troops faced the German Army from 1917 onwards and participated in heavy fighting in Flanders during 1918.
Photographs depicting Portuguese soldiers as German prisoners of war on the Western Front represent an interesting subject within First World War military photography.
The reverse retains its original German press caption with photograph number 3358.
Also present is the red W. Meissner Berlin SW.68 stamp referring to permission from the Generalstab der Armee for publication.

Originele Duitse legerfoto uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog met daarop drie krijgsgevangen genomen Portugese militairen aan het Westfront

De drie militairen staan naast elkaar en dragen hun Portugese uniformen en de kenmerkende Portugese stalen helmen.
Het originele Duitse bijschrift op de achterzijde luidt ‘Bilder von der Westfront’ en vermeldt dat het gaat om de eerste aan het Westfront buitgemaakte Portugese militairen.
Volgens het bijschrift betreft het één onderofficier en twee manschappen, waarbij twee van de drie bovendien familie van elkaar zouden zijn.
Portugal vocht tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog aan geallieerde zijde en stuurde het Corpo Expedicionário Português naar het Westfront in Frankrijk en België.
Portugese troepen kwamen daar vanaf 1917 tegenover het Duitse leger te staan en waren onder meer betrokken bij de zware gevechten in Vlaanderen in 1918.
Foto’s waarop Portugese militairen als Duitse krijgsgevangenen aan het Westfront zijn afgebeeld vormen een bijzonder onderwerp binnen de fotografie van de Eerste Wereldoorlog.
Op de achterzijde bevindt zich het originele Duitse persbijschrift met fotonummer 3358.
