The Vrijwillige Landstorm

The Vrijwillige Landstorm (Voluntary Home Guard) was established on August 4, 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War.
Just two days later, on August 6, the first unit was officially formed.
The purpose of the Vrijwillige Landstorm was to organize and integrate the large influx of volunteers—estimated at around 20,000—who came from the Dutch civilian defense movement and wanted to help protect the country during the Great War.
The volunteers trained in their spare time and were issued military equipment and weapons.
Even after the end of the First World War, the Vrijwillige Landstorm continued to exist.
In 1918, it was expanded with the Bijzondere Vrijwillige Landstorm (Special Voluntary Home Guard).
After 1920, several specialized corps were formed within the Vrijwillige Landstorm, including the Motor Service, Vessel Service, Railway Service, Air Watch Service, and Anti-Aircraft Service.
In 1939, as the Dutch armed forces mobilized in response to the looming Second World War, the Vrijwillige Landstorm had grown to over 90,000 volunteers.
Of these, 42,338 were mobilized.
During the fighting in May 1940, they took part in the defense and suffered casualties.

Het betreft een zomer uniform.

De Vrijwillige Landstorm

De Vrijwillige Landstorm werd opgericht op 4 augustus 1914, direct bij het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Slechts twee dagen later, op 6 augustus, werd de eerste eenheid officieel gevormd.
Het doel van de Vrijwillige Landstorm was om de grote toestroom van vrijwilligers – naar schatting zo’n 20.000 – afkomstig uit de particuliere weerbaarheidsbeweging in Nederland, op te vangen en hen een plek te geven binnen de krijgsmacht.
De vrijwilligers trainden in hun vrije tijd en ontvingen militaire uitrusting en wapens.
Ook na het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog bleef de Vrijwillige Landstorm bestaan.
In 1918 werd deze uitgebreid met de Bijzondere Vrijwillige Landstorm.
Na 1920 ontstonden er daarnaast gespecialiseerde korpsen binnen de Vrijwillige Landstorm, waaronder de Motordienst, Vaartuigendienst, Spoorwegdienst, Luchtwachtdienst en de Luchtafweerdienst.
Toen in 1939, aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, de Nederlandse krijgsmacht werd gemobiliseerd, telde de Vrijwillige Landstorm meer dan 90.000 vrijwilligers.
Van hen werden 42.338 daadwerkelijk gemobiliseerd.
Tijdens de gevechten in de meidagen van 1940 vochten zij mee en vielen er onder de eenheden slachtoffers te betreuren.
