Original Postwar lot of correspondence by NSB member Johan Carp

This extensive lot of postwar correspondence by Johan Carp offers a penetrating and rare insight into the thinking and network of a former NSB ideologue in the decades following the Second World War. The collection consists of handwritten letters, typescripts, and loose notes, dating mainly from the 1960s–1970s, addressed to a wide range of correspondents including journalists, acquaintances, and like-minded individuals. In these texts, Carp reflects at length on politics, history, National Socialism, the so-called Jewish question, and his own position after his conviction, continually defending and rationalizing his views.
The lot largely comprises letters written in his own hand.

Carp held a doctorate in constitutional law and was a specialist on Spinoza. Before the Second World War, he served as a department head at the Provincial Chancellery of South Holland. A fascist by origin, he gradually developed into the principal theoretician of Anton Mussert’s National Socialist Movement (NSB), of which he was a close personal friend and adviser. He married Mussert’s childhood sweetheart, Maria Kerkhoven.
Their close relationship is further evidenced by the fact that Carp was the last person to bid farewell to Mussert on the night of 5–6 May 1946, before Mussert was taken to the place of execution.

Dit omvangrijke lot naoorlogse correspondentie van Johan Carp biedt een indringend en zeldzaam inkijkje in het denken en netwerk van een voormalige NSB-ideoloog in de decennia na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het geheel bestaat uit handgeschreven brieven, typoscripten en losse notities, daterend hoofdzakelijk uit de jaren 1960–1970, gericht aan uiteenlopende correspondenten zoals journalisten, bekenden en geestverwanten. In deze stukken reflecteert Carp uitvoerig op politiek, geschiedenis, het nationaalsocialisme, het Jodenvraagstuk en zijn eigen positie na de veroordeling, waarbij hij zijn overtuigingen blijft verdedigen en rationaliseren. Het lot bestaat veelal uit door hem handgeschreven brieven. Carp was een gepromoveerd staatsrecht-jurist en Spinoza-kenner. Voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Carp afdelingshoofd bij de provinciale Griffie van Zuid-Holland. Hij was fascist van oorsprong en hij ontwikkelde zich gaandeweg als de belangrijkste theoreticus van de Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging (NSB) van Anton Mussert, wiens persoonlijke vriend en adviseur hij was. Hij huwde het jeugdvriendinnetje van Mussert, Maria Kerkhoven. Hun vriendschap blijkt ook uit het feit dat Carp de laatste was die in de nacht van 5 op 6 mei 1946 afscheid nam van Mussert, voordat deze naar de executieplaats moest vertrekken. Een museaal en onderzoekswaardig ensemble met historische en documentair-historische waarde.
