Original Dutch WWII liberation photos

Special and historical set from May 1945, shortly after the liberation of the Netherlands.
This original piece consists of a cardboard backing on which two photographs are mounted, offering a unique glimpse into the first days after the end of the German occupation.

Central to the set is a document reading “Canadian Army Leave Centre – HQ & Report Centre”, with the handwritten note “1945 Mei” below it. Such signs were placed shortly after the liberation to inform Canadian soldiers about leave and reporting centres. Canadian troops played a crucial role in the liberation of large parts of the Netherlands in the spring of 1945.

In addition, two black-and-white photographs illustrate the atmosphere of the liberation period. One photo shows a mannequin dressed in an NSB uniform hanging from a window together with an NSB flag. The other photo shows four women with shaved heads, a confronting image referring to the public punishment of women who were accused of collaboration with the German occupiers during the war.

The whole is mounted on a sturdy cardboard backing with clipped corners.

Originele WWII Nederlandse bevrijdingsfoto’s 

Bijzonder en historisch set uit mei 1945, direct na de bevrijding van Nederland. Dit originele stuk bestaat uit een kartonnen blad waarop twee foto’s zijn bevestigd die een uniek beeld geven van de eerste dagen na het einde van de Duitse bezetting. Centraal staat een document met de tekst “Canadian Army Leave Centre – HQ & Report Centre”, met daaronder handgeschreven “1945 Mei”. Dergelijke borden werden kort na de bevrijding geplaatst om Canadese militairen te informeren over verlof- en meldpunten. De Canadese troepen speelden een cruciale rol bij de bevrijding van grote delen van Nederland in het voorjaar van 1945. Daarnaast zijn twee zwart-wit foto’s toegevoegd die de sfeer van de bevrijdingsperiode laten zien.
Op één foto is een pop met een NSB uniform te zien die vanuit een raam hangt samen met een NSB vlag. Op de andere foto staan vier vrouwen met kortgeknipt haar, een confronterend beeld dat verwijst naar de publieke bestraffing van vrouwen die tijdens de oorlog beschuldigd werden van collaboratie met de bezetter.
Het geheel is gemonteerd op een stevige kartonnen ondergrond met afgesneden hoeken.
Een interessant Tweede Wereldoorlog-geschiedenis, dat een indringend en veelzijdig beeld geeft van de eerste momenten van vrijheid in Nederland in mei 1945.
