During the Indonesian War of Independence (1945-1949), the Netherlands launched two major military offensives, known as the ‘Politionele Acties’ (Police Actions), in an attempt to restore Dutch colonial rule in the Dutch East Indies.
During this period, Dutch military personnel, including soldiers of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL), fought against Indonesian independence fighters until the Netherlands transferred sovereignty in December 1949.
Batavia, the capital of the Dutch East Indies, served as the administrative and military centre of Dutch authority during these years.
