Original 1948 Dutch East Indies memorial prayer card commemorating Reserve Second Lieutenant Jan van Luyk, who was killed during the conflict in the Dutch East Indies on Java.
Jan van Luyk was born in Tilburg on 26 November 1924 and served as ‘Res. 2e Luit. 4-6 R.I.’, a Reserve Second Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion of the 6th Infantry Regiment.
According to the memorial card he fell ‘Voor het Vaderland’, or ‘For the Fatherland’, at Soenarsik on Java on 21 June 1948 at only 23 years of age.
The front features a portrait of Van Luyk wearing his Dutch military uniform and beret, accompanied by a religious verse and the Dutch red, white and blue colours.
The reverse records his full name, birthplace of Tilburg, date of birth, military rank and unit together with the location and date of his death on Java.
The extensive memorial text describes how he left his parental home to serve and ultimately made the greatest sacrifice, stating that while called upon to lead others, he himself fell while wearing the uniform.
It also commemorates his cheerful nature, loyal friendship and compassion, followed by words addressed to his parents, brothers, sisters, friends and comrades-in-arms.
The card forms a personal and historically interesting document from the period of the Indonesian War of Independence and the Dutch military presence in the former Dutch East Indies.

Origineel Nederlands-Indisch bidprentje uit 1948 ter nagedachtenis aan reserve tweede luitenant Jan van Luyk, die tijdens de strijd in Nederlands-Indië op Java om het leven kwam
Jan van Luyk werd op 26 november 1924 geboren te Tilburg en diende als ‘Res. 2e Luit. 4-6 R.I.’, reserve tweede luitenant bij het 4e bataljon van het 6e Regiment Infanterie.
Volgens het bidprentje viel hij ‘Voor het Vaderland’ te Soenarsik op Java op 21 juni 1948, op slechts 23-jarige leeftijd.
De voorzijde toont een portret van Van Luyk in Nederlands militair uniform met baret, waaronder een religieuze tekst en de Nederlandse rood-wit-blauwe kleuren zijn aangebracht.
Op de achterzijde staat zijn volledige naam met geboorteplaats Tilburg, geboortedatum, militaire rang en eenheid en de plaats en datum van zijn overlijden op Java.

Ook wordt zijn persoonlijkheid beschreven, waaronder zijn opgewektheid, trouwe vriendschap en meelevende hartelijkheid, gevolgd door woorden gericht aan zijn ouders, broers, zussen, vrienden en wapenbroeders.
Het bidprentje vormt een persoonlijk en historisch document uit de periode van de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog en de Nederlandse militaire aanwezigheid in Nederlands-Indië.
