Original 1947 Dutch KNIL top secret intelligence report from the Dutch East Indies

Original ‘Top Secret’ intelligence report issued by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army and the Royal Netherlands Army, dated Batavia, 23 May 1947.
The document concerns ‘Intelligence Report No. 3 from Representative Medan’ and was issued by Cabinet CIG – Army Contact under reference number 238/TOP SECRET.
Consisting of several typed pages, the report provides an extensive analysis of the military and political situation in North Sumatra, covering developments in Medan, Batakland, Aceh, Siantar, Mandailing, Boekittinggi (Fort de Kock) and the East Coast of Sumatra.
It discusses tensions between the Batak population and armed Acehnese groups, the position of Governor Teungkoe Hassan, the concentration of Acehnese forces around Siantar and the growing instability throughout the region.
The report also examines the activities of the Netherlands Forces Intelligence Service (NEFIS), the leaking of confidential information through the Aneta press agency, the influence of republican propaganda and the declining support for the Republic of Indonesia among parts of the local population.
Traditional leaders, separatist movements in Batakland and the economic and social conditions in North Sumatra are also discussed in considerable detail.
The final page is signed on behalf of the Head of the Army Contact Service by A.J.E. van Berckelaer and addressed to the Army Contact representative of the ‘B’ Division.
Marked ‘TOP SECRET / NOT FOR PUBLICATION’, the report represents an important primary source from the Indonesian War of Independence shortly before the First Dutch Police Action of July 1947.

Origineel ‘Zeer Geheim’ inlichtingenrapport van het Koninklijk Nederlandsch Indisch Leger en de Koninklijke Landmacht, gedateerd Batavia, 23 mei 1947

Het rapport betreft ‘Inlichtingenrapport no. 3 van Vert. Medan’ en werd uitgegeven door Kabinet CIG – Legercontact onder nummer 238/ZEER GEHEIM.
Het uit meerdere getypte pagina’s bestaande document behandelt de militaire en politieke situatie in Noord-Sumatra en gaat uitvoerig in op de ontwikkelingen in Medan, Batakland, Atjeh, Siantar, Mandailing, Boekittinggi (Fort de Kock) en de Oostkust van Sumatra.
Het rapport beschrijft de spanningen tussen de Batakse bevolking en gewapende Atjehse groeperingen, de machtspositie van gouverneur Teungkoe Hassan, de concentratie van Atjehse troepen rond Siantar en de toenemende onrust binnen de regio.
Daarnaast wordt aandacht besteed aan de activiteiten van de Nederlandse militaire inlichtingendienst NEFIS, het uitlekken van vertrouwelijke informatie via persbureau Aneta, de invloed van republikeinse propaganda en de afnemende steun voor de Republiek Indonesië onder delen van de bevolking.
Ook komen de rol van traditionele leiders, separatistische bewegingen in Batakland en de maatschappelijke en economische situatie in Noord-Sumatra uitgebreid aan bod.
De laatste pagina is ondertekend namens het Hoofd Dienst voor Legercontacten door A.J.E. van Berckelaer en gericht aan de vertegenwoordiger Legercontact van de ‘B’-Divisie.
Het document draagt de classificatie ‘ZEER GEHEIM / NIET VOOR PUBLICATIE’ en vormt een bijzondere primaire bron uit de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog, kort voor de Eerste Politionele Actie van juli 1947.
