Original 1945-1949 Dutch East Indies Military Service Medal – ‘Uit Dankbaarheid na Eervol Volbrachte Militaire Dienst in Indonesië’ Schoonhoven

Original Dutch commemorative medal from the 1945-1949 period, issued as a remembrance of military service in the Dutch East Indies.
The obverse features the crowned coat of arms of the province of North Brabant with four lions, surrounded by the inscription ‘GEWEST SCHOONHOVEN’.
The reverse bears the inscription ‘UIT DANKBAARHEID NA EERVOL VOLBRACHTE MILITAIRE DIENST IN INDONESIË’, meaning ‘In gratitude after honourably completed military service in Indonesia’.
The inscription indicates that the medal was presented as a token of gratitude to a serviceman following the completion of his military service in Indonesia.
Such local commemorative and gratitude medals were presented to returning Dutch servicemen by local and regional organisations.
The medal dates from the period of the Indonesian War of Independence, during which large numbers of Dutch servicemen served in the Dutch East Indies and Indonesia between 1945 and 1949.

Originele Nederlandse penning uit de periode 1945-1949, uitgegeven als herinnering aan de militaire dienst in Nederlands-Indië

Op de voorzijde staat het gekroonde wapen van de provincie Noord-Brabant met vier leeuwen, omgeven door de tekst ‘GEWEST SCHOONHOVEN’.
Op de keerzijde staat de tekst ‘UIT DANKBAARHEID NA EERVOL VOLBRACHTE MILITAIRE DIENST IN INDONESIË’.
Deze tekst maakt duidelijk dat de penning als dankbetuiging werd uitgereikt aan een militair na het volbrengen van zijn militaire dienst in Indonesië.
Dergelijke lokale herinnerings- en dankpenningen werden na terugkeer van Nederlandse militairen uit Nederlands-Indië door plaatselijke en regionale organisaties uitgereikt.
De penning dateert uit de periode van de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog, waarin grote aantallen Nederlandse militairen tussen 1945 en 1949 in Nederlands-Indië en Indonesië dienden.
